Default Ceramic or paint protection question

Moving to slowly pull the trigger on a 992C4 and have a question. I want it in Gulf Racing livery via skin (meaning I'll opt for the no charge Guards Red) as I'm not going to pay $12k for PTS. My question is, can you apply a paint protection over the skin?

Yes, you can put PPF on top of the vinyl, but be aware that once you do it, the vinyl "skin" is going to come off when it comes time to remove the PPF. There are also ceramic coatings for PPF and Vinyl for hydrophobic properties and to help prevent it from getting etched by bird droppings, etc.

None of this stuff is not cheap to install properly. PTS paint and quality PPF (ie. XPEL) may be a longer lasting and more cost effective solution than PPF on vinyl. When the PPF does need to be replaced, it's designed to be easily removed from paint, not vinyl. Even with self-healing properties, you can damage the PPF enough to require replacement. That's no big deal on paint, but vinyl is a different story.

Thanx! How often, in general, does XPEL need to be replaced?

When it gets damaged or starts turning yellow on you. XPEL has a 10 year warranty against yellowing, but as the years wear on, the PPF will show it. I know folks that have removed it after 5 years or so for aesthetic reasons as the material ages.

Is the yellowing just age based or based on UV exposure?

It’s usually the glue that goes yellow first as a function of age and UV.

Gotcha. Just seems like a terrible waste to spend $12k and 4 months added to waiting list for PTS; would so much rather spend that kind of cash on other options - like air freighting the vehicle rather than deal with the Canadian border crossings etc. Nope not buying anything from the AK dealer, one sales encounter was enough.

Hope you get the car! I recently picked up a 992 C4 as well in all black. Absolutely love it. I'm also in the market for ceramic coating, I was thinking of doing a clear bra on the front bumper and ceramic coating the rest of the car...not sure what others would recommend/ what the best pricing is but happy to get some feedback or ideas. Currently I was quoted $600 for clear bra and $850 for XPEL ceramic coating

Thanx! Got to sell the Audi RS5 first so as soon as that's finalized I can (once again) go over my nth revision of the revised, revised version of my build
