dont see much racetex (alcantara) steering wheel (2ZF code) on 992....
whats ur thoughts on this?
ordered one but trying to gather advices on this option.
Somebody had written some time ago that the oil and dirt transfer from your hands messes them up and they are difficult to clean. I bet it feels nice in the hand, though.
I’ve had an alcantara wheel & wouldn’t spec it again. Oils from your hands would matte the material over time... and I would find myself consciously thinking about how often or where I was putting my hands. It was nice for DE/track days, but I’ve found that a leather wheel w/ some nice gloves provides more than enough grip.
My .02; on the other hand, Porsche needs to offer a alcantara/race-tex inlay on the PDK selector in aluminum. Right now the only option is leather. I’m sure most would like their wheel to match it like previous gens.
Nick make's some very good points, but as long as you accept you may need to re-cover the wheel in the next 3 years, I still think its a better covering than leather and adds 'something' into an otherwise bland interior.
If you go into this with open eyes then it's OK. If you don't feel that's an acceptable choice then leather would be better.
Personally, I absolutely love the Alcantara/SportTex wheel and would order it again. To be fair, I'm on my 4th car with one and I have never had to re-trim or swap one...

I sat in a 992 w/ an Alcantara wheel a couple weeks ago. Feels nice and looks nice enough brand new, but wouldn’t spec it on any Carrera.
Chris Harris has noted that all his Alcantara wheels gradually collect every driver’s ‘DNA.’ Grease, oil, and grime from your hands (and anyone else who drives the car) will show up soon enough. I’d rather maintain a leather GT wheel.

Alcantara steering wheels will start looking looking worn after a couple years of daily use. If you wear driving gloves, or particular about only getting into your car with freshly washed hands, then you may be ok. If you really like the material, just be ok with replacing it or recovering after a couple of years. Otherwise, order leather. It will hold up better. Yes, it will get shiny, but it won't look as bad as alcantara will after a short amount of time.
Seeing that I have alcantara on my steering wheel I'm now depressed after watching that video. At least it will still look good on my headliner and sun visors!

don’t be sad. It’ll last a few years and it can be replaced when it’s used up.
Perfectly fine for seating surfaces and things that you aren't touching like the headliner. visor, etc. It's a straight up terrible material for the steering wheel and/or shift ***** -- basically, should be avoided for anything that your hands touch. Sure, you can wear gloves, but when you do that, it doesn't matter what the steering wheel is covered in. If you actually drive your car, stay away from Alcantara/Racetex/Synthentic suedes for those high touch surfaces.
I wouldn't shy away from the alcantara wheel because of potential wear. I currently have an alcantara wheel in my M4 ClubSport and as others have said it does get dirty but doesn't everything? My intervention is done about once a month and consists of Sonax cleaner and so far so good for the last 2 years. I also have a little bristle brush I comb the wheel with whenever I get a moment or two in the car. For my 992 spec GTS (when it's released), I'll definitely be going with alcantara setup. I simply love the material over leather, carbon, aluminum.
