It has been years since Ive owned a Porsche but I am planning to buy a 992. I have been lurking for a while and the forum has been a valuable source of information.
My big decision is Targa or coupe. I currently have a BMW 440 hardtop convertible and have been considering switching to a 992 coupe. While I do some top down drives, I also have the top up most of the time. I plan to drive the car often almost as a DD. I have been thinking a sunroof equipped coupe with the sunroof open and windows down would give me enough environmental contact. On the other hand, the Targa is appealing depending on how long I have to wait. A problem only I can solve. I kind of feel I wont go wrong either way.
The panoramic sunroof on the 911 is great for letting light in, but it doesnt open very far. If you are coming from a convertible, I would get the Targa.

I went from a 991 CS cab to a 992 CS coupe with the glass sunroof and haven't missed the convertible at all (so far). Like you I would do top down drives occasionally but mostly had the top up.
Agreed that the sunroof is really nice, but doesn't fully open. It's great for light in terms of ambience, but it's not exactly the 'next best thing' for wind in your hair driving.
The targa has lovely lines and, historically (so I understand) holds its value a little better.
Welcome. I absolutely love the 992 Targa and build one on the configurator quite often these days. My main struggle is how often would I ride with the top off (not to mention the modestly built $161k I'd have to part with)? I also have no frame of reference for the reliability of the top, rattles, how much noisier the cabin is, etc. One can ride with the top down more often than not here in LA, so depending on your location, tough decision! The glass sunroof was a must have for me and unless I'm parked in the sun for and extended period, the cover is never closed. However, I haven't opened the roof much as of yet (only 1k miles) as I prefer a little more quiet cabin esp if the wife is with me. Plus, direct sun can be bothersome at times.
All that said, if I was starting from scratch today the Targa would be VERY tempting. If it was not a DD, I'd go Targa all the way, but definitely more to consider as a DD as you do lose space in the back seats if that is important for you...
Good luck with your decision! Looking forward to see which way you end up going.
Targa I'd argue is the best looking of the crew... I'm still likely to order one BUT
- Cost premium hurts when these cars are getting scary expensive optioned how I'd want.
- The back seat issue I need to investigate and won't be able to until I can sit in one in the flesh. I want to DD this car and that means the occasional school drop off with and 8 and 6 year old. So if the back seat is materially smaller it hurts.
- I'm also not convinced I'd have the top off enough to justify. Even here in LA, I find daytime driving often too uncomfortable without something covering my ever-thinning head of hair
