Is it all in the tires? (GT4 beats 992 around track)

And the end of the day the GT4, albeit a GT car, is still the baby entry level Porsche product. I've had one, it was cool, but it still was a Cayman.

lap times really, really matter IF you are on a racetrack.... racing against others who have the same exact skill level!
laughable and pathetic that this would cause any grief to an owner...

I almost bought a GT4 back in 2016. When the dealer got their allocation I was working in Japan and decided to pass. Glad I did. After driving the 992, it fits what I am looking for in a DD sports car much better. As already posted, lap times are only important if you are racing on the track in a timed event. If the 992 isn’t fast enough, just spend more money and make it faster. As we said back in the day, “speed cost money, how fast do you want to go?”

I really don't get why Porsche has been constantly blurring the line between the Cayman / Boxter cars and the 911.... there was a time when the "poor mans Porsche" was clearly the slower car, but now it's hard to justify and there are videos galore on YouTube proving it... does Porsche want to phase out the 911?

Different cars with different purposes. I found it interesting, although it certainly would not give me any pause in what car I want to purchase. If cost was not object, I’d really like a 918. The fact that the GT2 RS is faster around virtually all tracks doesn’t make the 918 a bad car by any stretch, even though it is 3x the price.
Somewhere there is always something faster unless you are the singular person who literally does have the fastest car :-)

In numerous HPDE I was never particularly impressed by the '16 GT4, including around the bends. Maybe the owners were saving the car. That doesn't mean that it's a more fun car around the track, perhaps akin to the PDK being faster and more efficient versus a manual that's more engaging and fun. I drive a 992 PDK and still have a lot of fun around the track.

There is an argument that the mid-engine Cayman platform is better (in terms of handling, weight, etc...) than the rear-engine 911 platform. Hence, Porsche Motorsport should unleash the full potential of that platform by fixing the gear ratios (people complain that the current Cayman gear ratios are too tall, hindering 0-60 and acceleration) and/or giving it more power (e.g. install the full-fat GT3 engine in it).

Just as they have admitted to in turning the motor around in the RSR...
If the motor hanging out the back was better they'd still be running it that way. Just sayin'.

You actually see the opposite complaint on the Cayman forums and among some journalists too.

Its pretty impressive considering the gt4 is manual with super long ratios and the 992 has the new 8 speed pdk with much shorter 2-4 ratios. And more torque. Tires and weight eaqualized that handicap quite nicely

I hate to pee in your Cheerios, but if you’re going to compare the 992 S with MPSC2 tires to the GT4, then you should also drop the PDK into the GT4 while you’re at it. The C2S they tested may have been on PZeros, but it was a PDK car. Don’t act like PZeros are some hard winter tire, either. They’re barely less sticky than Cup 2s. The 718 GT4 is due some credit. Give it up.
It’s not just that the Cayman is running Cup 2s, but it has a TON of tire. A light, mid engine car like a Cayman S or GTS typically runs 265 rears, and that’s plenty. The GT4 is running 295s and 245 up front. This car is over-tired (a word?). This car has a ton of tire. Also, keep in mind that shorter tracks are to the Cayman’s benefit/advantage vs the 992, which doesn’t get the opportunity to stretch its legs as much and take advantage of its power. Pretty confident a longer track and the 992 edges the GT4, regardless of tire.

Whats even crazier was that the turbo s did the same lap in like 1:30 which isnt that much better than both the manual gt4 AND the 992 S. These cars are stupid fast on track
