Read an interesting snippet in Excellence and, though I’m not sure I totally agree with it, there is some truth to it at least with respect to the 991.

May I know who wrote the Excellence piece? As I have typically compared newer 911s to ac 911s to decide what’s a keeper 911 or not, I decided for the 3rd time in last decade to go backwards again by going ac. The Excellence snippet is interesting as I’ve not tried 992s.

I have an air-cooled in the garage alongside the 992.

The 992 is not really going to replace an air-cooled 911. Nothing is going to replicate the feel of those old cars. It's not about performance - it's the seating position, windshield, toothpick thin A pillars, the hydraulic steering...a million little differences that give the air-cooled cars their own feel. Even a '98 feels like something from the 60s.

That said, I really like the 992. Where the 991 felt a little distant, the 992 feels a little more alive. The power is just enough to liven up the chassis - I think the 991 Carrera is maybe just too...safe. The steering feel is also just that much better in the 992. The whole package works - I've been having fun thrashing the thing. It's the real deal and, to be honest, I'm enjoying it more than my 993 right now.

The biggest difference is whereas the 993 is always "on", the 992 is more dual personality. You have to push it a bit to open her up.

Another couple of snippets from "911 & Porsche" comparing the 992 to the 964 (Steve Bennet)

What is you're coming from a 2013 991.1 Carrera S? Is the 992 that much better? One reason I couldn't justify going to the 991.2 was that I didn't see it as that much better other than the lower end power/torque and some of the electronics (Car Play/PCM 3.1). Dealer says even a 992 base would significantly impress me and outperform my current car.

The Dealer is right, but if you’re not interested in buying a new 911, Do Not take one out for a test drive. If you do, it will be all over.

Get what excites you and don't let others talk you into anything else.
This.

I'm also biased as I recently became a 991.2 TTS owner, but almost 1 month ago I could have chosen a new 992 C4S at almost the same cost instead. My Porsche weekend car experience is grounded in a more classic dashboard with analog gauges because “I” felt that was more genuine than the video game experience of the 992. It also goes without saying that a Turbo S is just not comparable to a C4S, but I also felt my “keeper” needed to be more “classic”.

Even so, there is a future where I pick up a 992 GTS 4 manual as a stable mate to my Turbo S.

I also chose the 991.2 TTS over the 992 C4S because I planned to keep this car forever. In that metric I think the 991.2 TTS is definitely the right decision between the two. The 992 is a fantastic car though.

991.1 is naturally aspirated and that is a plus for some, but for me the 992 was just newer and felt so all across the board. The better performance is also very obvious and even the base 992 will perform on par with the 991.2 and out perform the 991.1 so if that matters to you, then there is another reason. The final reason to stay 991 is if you just prefer the styling and more analogue interior... but if you want the current tech interior and newest Porsche look, then you have one choice.

Just drive a 992 back to back with a 991.2.l at the local Mclaren dealership. I’m sorry - for me - there’s no way the 992 is “better” than the 991.2 in ways I care about. The analogy to “video game” is right. I thought steering feel in the 992 was numb although the car certainly has grip and corners well. Also definitely better power. But I lost the visceral raw experience with the 992.

The only other comparison would be when I went from an E46 M3 to the E90 but even more so from the E90 to the F80. Just blah.

Sad I don’t feel differently….similar to others I’m sure one will be in my future as 991.2s get older but not for a while.

If (or should I say when) I get a stable mate for my 992 C2S manual, it will be another 997.
