Everyone has their own individual sweet spot in terms of performance vs dollar value proposition. There are no bad choices.
I am getting the Turbo S. Patiently waiting my turn to order which shouldn’t be much longer. But I’d point out - the jump from base carera to carrera S isn’t life changing money. The gap from carrera to Turbo S might be for some. But I agree and reiterate what I said first - they are all excellent cars and I’ll add here - you won’t be sorry you bought any of them.

Despite what people on the internet and some tune vendors claim, Porsche can determine that the car was tuned if they want to.
I think Matt Farah tried to take a deep dive into finding this info out, by checking technical documentation, and checking with Porsche insiders. If I remember correctly, the turbo "housings" are the same size, but "inlet wheels" are slightly larger (1-3mm) for one trim level over the other. He mentions it in one of the Smoking Tire 911GTS vids.

Nice!!!

I am looking for some confirmation on the head swap. That’s a pretty big potential change in terms of air flow, etc.

Flat-6 Motorsports should be able to confirm/deny...they offer turbo upgrade packages with OEM turbos. I was looking into getting a "Carrera T" to get the diff/PTV/manual/sound deadening removal over the base, but add GTS+ turbo kit to make a budget Sport Classic, at half the price.

I only mentioned the turbo-S because it is the top dog. The point is that there’s an entire progression in the lineup from base Carrera to Carrera-S to GTS to turbo to turbo-S with further trims/variants in between and everyone has a different financial threshold.

I'm pretty sure the brake calipers are 6 piston on the S vs 4 piston the regular as well (or at least that is how the 991 generation was).

I went from a base 991 to S in 992 , but only because of the manual transmission is only on the S. Comparing the two cars I prefer the base just slightly in terms of fun factor. The S is really fast and I can't rev it like I pushed the non S because with the S would just end up at too high speeds .

Turbo S is garbage, The GT3 RS is faster.

Sarcasm intended, to show the futility of the whole get an S over the base argument. There's always something with more power. pick the model that fits your need. There is no slow 992.

Great question!
I've been looking for an answer myself.
Here is what I've found.

Point 1.
There was the obvious differences between the internals of a base 991.2 engine and that in an S confirmed by Porsche.

Look closely to spot all the differences.

Point 2.
There are still two part numbers for a 992 3.0 engine pistons - just like there is for a 991.2 3.0 engine.
Only one number for a piston rod remains for a 992 instead of 991.2's two though.
Two part numbers for an auxiliary belt for Base and S/GTS.
