Default Proper etiquette for inquiring/ordering a 992

I live in a major metropolitan city with 7 Porsche dealers within a 60 mile radius. I have built my Carrera S on the Porsche Configurator and have begun emailing it to the dealers asking for a quote. Many have responded saying if they have allocations available and when i can come in to discuss further.

At what point do I really need to go in-person and is it fair for me to ask for a quote via email or phone so I can compare any discounts? Just not sure the proper way of doing this without pissing off dealers and if dealers give decent quotes via email or phone? Or if i do indeed have to go in person to see what they can offer? Thanks.

Tell them you will place an immediate order if they give you a 7% discount off of MSRP. And that they should call you immediately, and you will place a deposit with your credit card, and go in on Saturday and sign the order. That will wake them up. Pick the best deal.

Agree with above. Leave no wiggle room and make them know you are serious, aggressive and ready to close NOW. This isn’t a rare GT, it’s a Carrera. You have the advantage.

And get the email addresses ready for out-of-state dealerships.

Agree with Lex. You are giving them control with your approach. You need to take control. Set the rules.

You said it in your title, use etiquette and you'll be surprised that people who work at Porsche dealers actually want to earn your business and want you to have a great experience.

"heres my build code, I want 7% off, not a penny more, and I'm comparing you to many dealers, you want the deal?!" -Pass....

"Hi, I'd like to order a vehicle, I am expecting a 7% discount, will that work for your dealership" - Sure! (management permitting) when can you come in? Or would you prefer to work over email?

If I had 7 dealers in a 60 mile radius I'd probably try for 8%. If it was me I would probably go in person and explain, hey, there are 7 dealers in the immediate area. I know that 7% off MSRP is relatively common, how about you do 8% and I give you a deposit right now? I'm stopping here first, can we work together?

Wow...thanks so much for all the great feedback. Really solid points all around and I'll be sure to use this strategy.

let's see how well the "going for the jugular" approach works.....

might as well, I guess.... but there are places in this country where
they would escort you to the front door for asking for that...

Don't you have any idea what the market is like in YOUR city?

Lol, what kind of dealers are you guys dealing with? Escorted to the front door for asking for a discount on a common 911 Carrera?

We're not talking about a Faberge egg, here.

In my experience, dealers appreciate a respectful, but no bulls*it attitude. They have cars to sell, I have a life to live. I'm sure it's obvious that no one is suggesting OP goes to the dealer with some millennial entitlement complex and demand discounts.

This is just basic supply and demand stuff. No one is going to get a better deal than the market will allow, but they can certainly get a *worse* deal by being passive and apologetic about buying a $130,000 car.

I was not serious about being escorted- perhaps I should have said
that you might get the WTF look...

Send the following email to all the dealers you are working with or within your vicinity.
.
“I would like to buy a 992. This is my Porsche build code ____.

Please provide me your final out-the-door-price, inclusive of all taxes, fees, etc. In other words the amount of money I need to give you to take the keys and go home with the car.

I have cash in-hand, and ready to sign and take delivery today.

Thank you and I appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to finalizing this deal with you.”

The only thing missing in this email is a Nigerian Prince. Jeez.

I just show up in some beat up jeans, preferably with a hole in the crotch, and a well worn T-shirt, plus a hoodie, if it’s cool out. If you want to be taken seriously, never show up at a dealer dressed to the 9s. Don’t be a poseur. Leave the cufflinks and Gucci at home. You want respect? dress down.

Then, I calmly lay out exactly what I want to do, with the options, and what I am looking for. If the deal doesn’t work, I leave without fanfare. You should always be ready to leave.

I do it in person. Maybe that’s old school, but people treat you differently when you don’t treat them like a commodity.

Who gives a flying f*** about etiquette? It's war baby and when you step into a dealership you're on their turf so negotiate by phone. I would call every dealer after which you'll have a darn good idea of what the best price will be. There's usually at least one that really wants to move a car and will give you the best price.

Consider making a simple spreadsheet containing a line item breakdown of your build along with your discount ask. Send it in an email as an attachment. You are fortunate to be in an area with several competing dealerships. I did this for my build and got a favorable outcome. Ultimately, I found a demo car with my specs that I bought off the lot though.

I wouldn’t worry about etiquette. This is a business transaction and should be handled accordingly. Be cordial but remain in control of the deal. It’s perfectly acceptable (and in your best interest) to negotiate the deal by email before you walk in. Once you walk in to the dealer and see the shiny 992s in the showroom your emotions will take over.
