having never owned a detector and waiting for my c2s to arrive, I am trying to "be prepared" with some
goodies when the car arrives...
I just wonder why no one mounts the detector low(slightly above dash) and on the passenger side?
Do you need to look at the detector and fiddle with it or are they good to go once set-up?
It seems like getting it out of ones field of view would be a good thing, no?

For radar, it’s most effective the higher that you can locate it in the car — increased detection range. It should also be near the car’s centerline and pointed straight ahead. The antennas are directional and units like Valentine V1, R7, and Max 360 have front/back antennas to determine direction of the signal.
For laser, the officer is pointing the device at the front of your car. Centerline is important to detect it. Laser detection actually works better with the device closer to the dash, but it’s basically a “ticket detector”, because you’re not getting the “in use” detection that you get with radar.
Long range detectors like the R7 are useful, even in the instant on era, because they can detect radar use so far ahead that you have plenty of warning.

^Agree with that detasinn mentions above.
And you do want to be able to easily reach the detector while driving so that you can hit the mute switch and teach it GPS based lock outs. Here is a link that contains tons of quality information on radar detectors https://www.vortexradar.com/
On my 991 and my 971 I used these for mounts, https://www.ebay.com/itm/NEW-Uniden-...P/123704041815
I couldnt digest the size of the R7 so I went with R3 and Im very impressed with its range and ability to shut off the X and K. I usually mount them where I cant see the device very well so the arrows while nice are not a factor for me.
Yes it comes off the mount just like the stock included mounting pieces. Since I have a cab I take it off the mount and put it in the glove box when I leave the car parked. I dont know how long the suction cups hold but for the short $$ of these mounts I wanted something more permanent but removable if needed.

So how are you getting power? Looks like from the mirror but that is not a plug and play solution- so tell your secrets!!

Unlike car radios, people still steal radar detectors. Given the pricepoint of the R7, I have stowed mine away while traveling and parking somewhere unknown.
Sorry that's a 991.2 mirror tap. It seems No one has gotten into a 992 mirror with a multi meter yet to identify the switched wires to tap.
Wrong car but still the question remains: how did you get power to the unit? surely not from the mirror because that would be a huge hassle to reinstall
the leads each time??????????
Using a credit card you can drop the panel to access the power in the console above the mirror. I'll get you the thread that walked me through it. Once yer in there and know what wires you are addressing it only took 15 minutes and I was driving.
