Seems like this would be a no brainer. You are taking a job promotion. Should be at least a 30% bump in pay, plus cost of living adjustment, plus re-loc allowance. Just buy the thing already.
He didn't say it was a promotion. He said it was an offer he couldn't refuse.
Ross saw this late in the game, but I live in Midtown Manhattan and self park (key stays with me) in my own reserved area my 458 (which currently has snow tires on it) and a GT-R. Hopefully have another p-car soon. You can definitely have a car in the city and it's an absolute joy to get the hell out of here whenever you can with great roads a short ride away in almost every direction. I pay very little for parking, exotic or otherwise, though it did dictate where I decided to live and was a colossal pain in the ***. I started going to garages near an apartment I was looking at before I ever bothered seeing a place since that took precedence. With persistence I was able to arrange self park at way, way less than the $800-1600 most wanted once they heard Ferrari. No need to give up your passions for NYC.
I just want to chime in on owning a car in NYC. I don't know what drivers are like in Toronto, but drivers in NYC and the surrounding areas are shockingly bad. When I moved to CA there was less aggression and recklessness. With that said, neither has good drivers. Also almost every single bumper I see in NYC has dings and scratches. I've sat at bars and coffee shops and watched people "park" where they bounce their car off another one.
The roads are terrible. I once bent my steering arm, and popped my tire on a pothole because it was literally the size of a bucket.
Finally, the traffic sucks and renting garage space is ridiclous.
Whoever said owning a 911 in NY is a right of passage is full of it.
Hey everyone and thank you for the comedic relief! I started to believe they put me in the wood chipper as well.
So I arrived at the dealership bright and early Saturday morning. Before sitting down I was being upsold on winter rims and tires 😂 can’t even be mad about that!
Sat down broke my rep the news, he was upset and told me there is nothing he can do. “This is your car, it’s registered to you from Germany”. After minutes of listening to this I asked politely to speak with the manager. Came out and said the same thing, nothing they can do. Awkward silences and all. Eventually they told me to take delivery and resell it in NYC because it’s cheaper in Toronto. I asked if there were laws about exporting vehicles, told me it’s no problem “You purchased with the intent to use it”.
The wife was not pleased and started getting a little upset, mentioning if we were to lose our jobs or extenuating circumstances occurred what were our options. They said it’s never happened before.
Then they said if I didn’t take the vehicle that “the owners of the dealership are very wealthy and have lots of money to spend on lawyers”. This went on for another 5-10 minutes. I then asked to speak to another manager because I was either taking the car or getting sued by Porsche Downtown Toronto.
Eventually we called another manager, he was very nice. Good cop, bad cop. Congratulated me on the job, told me how nice NYC is and that no one at the dealership that Saturday could make the decision. Told me to email him and say “Due to unforeseen circumstances I am not able to take delivery”, he said the owner would make the call and even mentioned they needed legal evidence...
Still waiting for a response, going to follow up today! Wish me luck
I don’t think anywhere in the thread it mentions the car being registered in Germany. Someone suggested he buy the car in Toronto and sell it back to the dealer because the loss would be smaller than walking from the deposit. It would make it registered in Canada if he did that.
Thanks . I missed that. It’s definitely nonsense from the sales agent, the car is not registered.
Agreed. I bet Porsche Toronto already "punched the warranty" and are freaking out now. That's why Ross should have alerted the dealership much-much-much sooner. Ross knoew he was interviewing for the job promotion/transfer prior to the car shipping.
