Speculative observations:
The new 718 GTS strikes me as a GT4/Spyder “touring,” effectively. That nomenclature might have made more sense, although it would have left a hole in the lineup at the GTS tier (which exists in every model vertical with the exception of the Taycan, at least for now).
It could be that Porsche is moving toward expressing the GTS tier across model vertical lineups as a decontented Turbo versus an enhanced S. The performance will probably be a wash (it will still fit between the S and the Turbo, and some of the model hierarchies are thinly sliced already).
This strategy would probably increase average selling prices (i.e., more people will be compelled to step up to the GTS from the S, likely outweighing those Turbo intenders who would “settle” for the GTS), and also help amortize the cost of the Turbo trim powerplants. The downside ... overall fleet emissions and displacement taxes (in applicable markets).
Last thing: if you’re looking forward to the 9A2 4.0L NA engine in a 992, be thankful that it will probably arrive in Carrera T guise versus GTS - it will be (much) cheaper for you!

Well there is no Cayenne GTS at the moment but I bet it would get same engine as Panny GTS. The 718 GTS is coming with a 4.0 NA so that moves us off track on turbos. To me the 3.8 is reserved for the Turbo Turbo in the 911 and it would be a little nuts to offer that in a GTS.

There are some nice GTS variants that have been made. However, again the whole GTS badge is marketing off past glories. The idea of badging a SUV as a GTS is rather absurd if consider the original GTS. That being the 904 GTS, a street leagal race car built in numbers to satisfy homolegation. Then again, it's not my company and they can do anything that sells units.

Porsche has been successful making the 911 GTS an option+tune value package. Can't think of a reason to change.
If they make 5 bolt attractive wheels a no cost option, they get me to give up the best 911 I have ever owned.

I bet youre right, prob 2 psi some bigger turbos and a bunch of alcantara with sport options and bumpers.
However if they go crazy and do it like the panamera gts with the turbo engine and make it more widebody things will be very very interesting.
Imagine 500hp rwd manual. From the factory.
