I wouldn’t order it personally but I have no choice since, at least with a manual, Porsche has decided that it IS essential and packaged it in.

Yes. It is essential.

In addition to the aforementioned changes in the thread, sport chrono also adds adaptive engine and transmission mounts.

I don't have it, and I don't miss anything.

It's essential. Had it on both of my 991s, my current 2020 Macan S, and speccing it on my 992 order. Sure, I'm in Sport mode 90% of the time, but every time I throw it into Sport + or use the Sport Response button I'm just blown away. If you're spending $100k plus on a 911 I can't understand why one would pass on a relatively inexpensive option like SC. And like others have said, I would 100% pass on any P car that didn't have it equipped.

I've never quite understood the way porsche grouped functionality. In my 991 the actual sport chrono function (eg the timing) was useless to me. But basically for the package cost you got a clock and an extra mode.. For the 991.1 it added sport+ which I had no use for with PDK as it redlined every gear. Maybe if you were racing the car it would have value but when I accidentally selected the mode it generally startled the bejesus out of me. Looks like they added some variant modes since then, but my guess is you would rarely if ever use it.

I don't plan to order sport chrono on the build I'm working on now.

Yes there will be those who try to convince you that if you don't have common options like these it your resale will be crap. But the resale is going to be crap anyway in the first few years... and if you keep for a long time it kind of stops mattering.

I say skip it unless you really like the clock..

Big surprise: whether you need Sport Chrono or not depends on how you're going to drive the car! As I recall, it's a £1,646 option in the UK and, personally, I wouldn't call that "relatively inexpensive". I'm in my sixties and my days of traffic light duels and vastly illegal speeds on country roads are behind me. I enjoy the precise steering of the 992, the fantastic acceleration and its style but, after 1000 miles, I haven't once thought that I should have ordered Sport Chrono (it was included on several of the early configurations amongst the 63 that I produced). Moreover, I actively dislike the silly clock on the dashboard (my wife has one in her Macan).

You want this for resale alone on any Porsche 911 (new) period. They should just include it and raise the price. This is a lost sale for the majority of 911 buyers...even if you're not a typical one, trust me and just check the box. This one is linked to a lot more than it has been in the past anyways.

Try a base car, to a select few having less is more.

My wife and I think it's a must. Ordered it on her 9Y0 Turbo and love it. Launch Control is a ball, even in a full-on torque-converter automatic, and I run around playing little juvenile boy in Sport Plus more often than I should. With PSE, Sport Plus cranks the exhaust to even more raciness than usual, increasing the crackles, pops, burbles and bangs on overrun well beyond what you get in plain Sport mode.

We personally will not buy another Porsche without Sport Chrono and PSE. We're all about increasing the visceralness of the drive. It's a Porsche, not an Audi or Benz (excluding RS and full-on AMG). Does it make it faster, ruder and noisier? Sign us up!

Revive a "Dead Horse"...as of December of 2020, PCNA put Stop Sell Order on Sports Chrono 991.1 Porsche cars, and others as well. In February, 2021, I wanted a 991,1, and I wanted to buy it from a dealer for the full 2 year CPO. Lot's of reasons why this wasn't;t the best of all possible courses, but it's what I decided on. I found a 2013 Carrera S, no Sport Chrono with Sport Exhaust, Sun Roof delete, snagged it.....I had Sport Chrono on my previous Cayman GTS...shifting at the track was indeed aggressive. But in the Sport Chrono mode, it went Red Line ion the 1st 6 gears, not very practical on the street. I only used it on the track.

Fast forward to Spring 2021, Took my "pathetic" 991.1 lacking Sport Chrono to the track....the performance was stellar. I simply couldn't believe it. Damn!!! No auto Red Line in each gear...I didn't miss it.

Maybe PAG took pity on the non-Sport Chrono owners, and sparked up the performance of the 991.1 PDK in Sport Mode? Perhaps not as aggressive as Sport Chrono, but close enough for me. I could change my mind if I can find someone foolish enough to loan me their 991.1 Sport Chrono equipped car...I promise, I won't do a "launch"! Well; maybe just one...want to see that 0 - 60 in 3 seconds!. Most know that this is impossible anyway, 4 seconds with PDK more likely. My Tesla Y with optional Performance Package will get to 60, quietly, in 3.7 seconds. The Model 3 with Performance Package is even quicker, silent but deadly. BUT!!!! It's not a Porsche.

If you get stuck in this Stop Sell Nonsense, and wind up with a 991.1 with PDK, Sport Exhaust,,,,,it will be OK, you'll be fine. As far as going to higher RPMs with Sport Chrono, that's fun. But the downside, at the track, the engine works harder, and gets hotter sooner....water at about 210, but oil can go 270 +. If my car gets to oil temp of 270, I am coming off and doing a little cool down activity.

One lesser known "fact" you can overrun the motor in Sport Chrono mode...I need to point up that reference...ot has to do with the aggressive nature of the PDK programming in Sport Chrono mode...This could be BS.

I would maybe consider a manual without SC, but not a PDK without it. The driving functions really are half of what makes the PDK shine.

Except you can't get a manual 992 without SC.
