Default Extended Warranty: Any experiences?

First of all, I want to thank all of the forum contributors from whom I have gleaned much knowledge and wisdom! This is my first post, so please be kind if I'm doing it all wrong.

I am taking delivery of a 2020 911 in a couple weeks, and I plan on using it as a daily driver. 10-12k miles per year is the plan and I hope to keep the car for 6-8 years. I have been offered from my dealership's business office an opportunity to buy an extended warranty. Typically, I do not purchase extended warranties for my cars, and oftentimes they have offered them at rather significant discounts when I decline. The current offer is as follows: "Mimics the manufacturer’s warranty for 10 years 100,000 miles with a $250 deductible $6,785"

Anyone have any experience with these warranties? Is this a good value ultimately? Are they from Porsche directly? Do they work well and cover most of what is covered by the initial warranty? Do they discount them when they are declined initially? Can they be purchased later? Any insight would be greatly appreciated!

Politely pass. Wait until you have a few months or so left, or less, and buy it then if you still have the car. There is no need paying for coverage now that you already have!

You have plenty of time to look into extended warranties but if you are curious do a search in the 991 Forum and you can see what others are doing, such as buying a Fidelity warranty.

Yes, you can buy these up until the point your original warranty expires. For a Porsche, they’re very much skippable. For a McLaren? Different story. Lol

You should be able to buy an extended warranty anytime, the price will depend on the coverage and miles you have on the clock. Fidelity is a popular aftermarket Porsche warranty, I purchased one for my 15 Macan Turbo after 4.5 years with less than 35k miles and it’s already paid for itself. Going beyond 35k miles or the end of 2018 was going to increase the price I paid.

As the others stated, wait until you have the car for a couple years. You’re covered by the factory warranty and there isn’t a benefit to paying all that money upfront now other than securing the current price. 3-4 years is a decent amount of time and your situation can change, reevaluate then.

Pass.

Just self insure if you’re concerned. The odds of catastrophic failure in a 10 year period, but outside the warranty window is pretty remote. Most likely - you keep most of your money at the end of 10 years.

Thank you for all the advice! Looks like the chorus says no to the extended warranty.

At least for now...you may not even own the car in 3 1/2 years so give it some time.

I was offered a prepaid maintenance plan on my 2014 Cayman S when I bought it new from my local dealer. It offered a pretty substantial discount on the annual service work for 5 years including a major service, and, since I knew I was going to keep the car for at least 5 years, I bought it and saved several thousand dollars. When I bought a 2019 Panamera, they offered a pre paid maintenance contract but the price was MUCH higher, and the savings were just not there so I passed on it.
Obviously, this is different from a warranty extension, but on that I agree with the comments above, don’t buy it now, maybe buy it later, and remember that the price is negotiable.

All depends on how long your going to keep the car. Yes you can purchase it later but if you buy it no its included with the financing of the car. The trick is to look online to find out the cost and offer to pay that much. Dealerships have tons of room on warranties you would be shocked.

Have only bought one extended warranty for a Porsche and it was a month before the factory warranty expired. As others have said, no reason to do it sooner. Mine was Porsche product and the dealer gave me a significant discount.

This has been discussed thoroughly on the forums in the past. Coming from the 987, 997 and 991 forums to this forum, it seems there a number of first time owners posting here. I urge you to first do a search to find if your question has already been covered, particularly if it is a general question like extended warranty. Here is a link for you .

I don't agree with this stagnant mentality. Information changes second by second, cars become old and people's opinions change just as fast. This is a living online forum not a dictionary. I would encourage people to post unless it is obvious duplication.

Extended warranties are great if you need that peace of mind after factory warranty. From my experience it has been worth it. Most likely if you are able to afford this brand it would outweigh the cost. You know how it is going through the whole dealer spiel whether now or later, if you are sure you will commit to it one way or another, you might be better off to just get it over with. Either way you will most likely be happy!

When a question arises I always search first and if I cannot find the answer to my question I will create a thread - don't we all do that on Google?

By the way, I have owned several different P models and one of the first things I have done after getting a new one is to read threads in the respective forum, page by page by page...I was always surprised as to how much I learned without asking any questions at all. Nevertheless, if someone wants to ask a question they have a right to do so.

Thanks, Bobz. I consider this just good forum etiquette. The question was about experiences and I think the link provides plenty. Just me, but I get really puzzled when questions are posed that show the manual has not been read or are duplicates of questions already on the same forum page.
