I'm in similar terrain. Some marmots chewed through a neighbor's gas line creating a potentially explosive situation. Mountain foothills are loaded with critters, some of whom wanna eat your stuff.

You’re exactly right. I’ll deal with it anytime as opposed to having someone living ten feet to the right and left of me. Living like this isn’t for everyone.
That 6", 8" where I was, was a rare day this year and a very good one.
I gotta say, I could make a list of reasons why your son and that kid should not have been there. Not only is it out of bounds but it's restricted. Nobody and I mean nobody, should have passed that rope, particularly now. We have an unstable layer that is almost guaranteed to last the season. Any new snowfall will be unstable. My touring equp is in a closet. Sadly it's predictable some will die in do not go zones. Let's hope there's no one below them. Your son is lucky to have escaped. And without a beacon nobody should ever be in the backcountry. Ever. I'm not gonna sugar coat it because he's your son. I can't tell you how maddeningly reckless that was.
I agree especially the more we talked with people more familiar with skiing than i am (i never really skied more a a Sherpa for the family). We told him no more unless it’s a properly guided trip and with proper training on what to look for etc. I know he didn’t go through the ropes it was a gate that you could go through into the chutes but i agree none the less still reckless. He’s now trying to do a heli ski trip in Canada now for Christmas next year🙄.
