Is there anything new about the R8 to justify including it? It's not a car I keep up with.

I'd say the R8 has as much right to be there as a Bentley. And why include a Lamborghini SUV? The Audi R8 V10 Plus has a 610hp naturally aspirated V10 engine, which I would say makes it rather special.

I didn't make my point well. There is nothing new about the R8, and only new/updated cars are what get featured in BDC. The 2017 R8 V10 Plus was included in the 2016 Best Driver's Car competition. It finished 7th out of 12. The R8 V10 Plus prior to that finished 3rd of 12. MT said the R8 finishing 7th wasn't because the 2017 is a bad car; rather it is because the competition took far greater steps forward than the R8. If the R8 gets a new generation I'm sure it will be included again.

I'm not knocking the R8. Just trying to explain why it was not included. You'll notice the Cayman wasn't included either. But the 718 Cayman GT4 will be included next year because it is new.

^ Ahh, ok. I didn't understand the criteria for being included in the competition.

That’s interesting, I can’t imagine why. I’ve always loved the R8, for its’ looks, performance, and sound. If it wasn’t for the fact that I need the flexibility that the more practical 911 offers, I’d be driving a used R8 already.

Re: the R8 its old news but the glorious 10 revs to 8700 and will soon be extinct. It ran a 1:35 with older gen p zeros because audi doesnt give a rat’s azz as long as they can sell a million A4s. Audi also recommends retarded tire pressures that dont work. Just stupid PR
Although the motor trend guys had to fiddle with the 992 settings and tire pressures to get it to run a 1:35, it looks really good on track. And its on crap tires too!!!
cant wait for the big dog 911s

Revisiting this thread after watching the MotorTrend DCOTY for 2020.

https://rennlist.com/forums/992-turb...end-dcoty.html

The field was cut short due to covid... but while I was watching some of the hot laps; I came across this video...

I don’t recall ever seeing this last year... it’s a fun watch.

This year was terrible but understandably they should get a pass due to COVID. Interesting that Porsche supplied three vehicles. Surprising that the Huracan EVO won despite Randy complaining about it having brake fade and obvious lack of confidence in the pedal. Johnny complained about the Porsche Turbo S being "too perfect a car". Also learned that Weissach tuned the Sport suspension in the Turbo S and Randy said the front end was "GT3-like" and called the Turbo S on track "like a GT3 but with 100+ more hp". Randy sure loved driving it and the Cayman GT4. Also surprising that Randy turned a faster lap this year in the Porsche Cayenne Turbo vs last year in the Lamborghini Urus, despite being down 100 hp and slightly heavier Cayenne. That Shelby GT500 is a real beast. Seriously impressive despite the size/weight. Too bad dealers want $30k+ over MSRP for them.

How one can seriously compare vehicles with such divergent costs seem just inane. How is that not a relevant factor?

Car magazine comparisons like this one, are usually not trying to answer the question of "which car would you buy if you had the means?" or even "which car is objectively the best out of all them?"

But rather, the question that seems to be presented is "if you had all of these cars in your garage, which key would you grab most often?"

In other words, it's not which car is the best but rather which car is the most enjoyable to drive.
