Had you leased you could still trade it in for the the market value, which would be no different than if you had purchased, but you will not have spent the sales tax that you will never get back. I'm on this boat unfortunately. I purchased my 718 S brand new 1 year ago in California and now need to sell it (for personal reasons). I'm out $7k in sales tax right away in addition to the depreciation. Had I leased I would probably be $4-5k ahead. I'm looking to get a 992 now and will be lease instead of purchasing.
It should be noted that sales tax works differently with leases depending upon the state that you live in.

Yes, there are legit financial institutions that do it. It's also a heck of a rabbit hole with a lot of sketchy players out there.
There are companies that will even let someone lease a used car -- most typically luxury cars and exotics.
If you're a responsible adult with your finances, uh, don't do that. :P

Definitely this is highly state dependent. I can only speak experience from CA and DC, both high sales tax states but do not levy sales tax on leases - only on purchase. I think VA charges the same sales tax whether it's a lease or a purchase so my point will not hold in VA.

Just surfing today I found some lease quotes on actual inventory vehicles at Porsche Conshohocken in eastern PA
Had some C4S coupes 145-150 K MSRP , leases $1,750-1800/month with 10% down, 36mos , 10-12K mi/year
Not great but sounds much better than that much for a non-S car and only 5k miles

And if in NVA, you have to pay personal property tax whether or not it’s leased. I paid some $12k just in personal property tax over my three year lease.

Ha, well it is way over generous public sector union pensions that are the main problem. And only idiots or posers with no cash lease here.
