Steer by wire has a very specific definition and in such a system there is no mechanical connection between the steering wheel and the car's wheels (term comes from aviation where Airbus first made planes of that variety - the yoke has no mechanical connection to the control surfaces).

Has anyone ran an ST against a Touring at the track, back to back like carwow did with the GT3 and Turbo S?

Just a Gt3 is not such as bad thing, very responsive front end turn in and RWS do make for an engaging drive. Do I love the S/T absolutely.

My guess is that they'd be fairly closely matched (objective laptimes close, but each with a different subjective character). Any objective differences likely to be swamped by the quality of amateur driver (by the clock).

The fact that you can order OEM S/T parts flywheel and clutch for the Gt3 touring/gt3 is pretty spectacular to me. I maybe one of the minority here but I think the front end of the 992 Gt3 is nearly perfect.

No it's just stating those that had Touring prior may miss characteristics of the Touring such as sharper driving and RWS. Everyone is so caught up on the SMFW and 90lbs of weight loss. I'm sorry, the sacrifices of weight aren't always justified when you seek a connected car.... and the first point of connection being the wheel has a slower less engaging steering rack. Sure the suspension has been "tuned" but we're literally talking about algorithms taken from the lowest setting of the 3rs(prove me wrong, please). I love they lowered the gear ratio and the shifter is shorter. Even in the 4RS the height of the shift **** is frankly annoying. Oddly enough the fanatics of that car seem to also love the ST for the same reason... the sounds within the cabin.
Now I'm no brand loyalist, but just based on the fact I'm a car guy I appreciate all things mechanical. I suppose my tastes just reside closer to the TH guys. Just note not their lack of enthusiasm for the ST as compared to both these 2 videos. Just saying.

you can isolate specific characteristics to claim that they are better or worse. However, it's not wise because a car is a whole, a system, and if Porsche took so long to fine-tune the S/T, it's because it's not as simple as that. I don't know how you can have such black-and-white positions.

Time will tell. Either way I'd say most would argue the 992 Turbo S is go good in so many ways that it can be somewhat dull. Amazing machine and absolutely love mine, but it can become so textbook that new challenges are needed. The 2RS will be the real "GOAT" as they may call it.

Who is the target market for the S/T?

Lol... now how many of them actually intend to drive it. You sure the ST isnt a scam?!... asking for a friend.
The ST will definitely make up some of the accounting hiccups.
