Awesome write up as always. I will admit for $125 I rather have oil changes done at my friend's shop but this is great for "in between or after track session quick oil change"

The manual also says don't change your brake pads and take the car to an authorized Porsche dealer. The manual also says to wash the wheels every 2 weeks. Over the last 20 years with more than a dozen GT cars, I only changed my spark plugs 1 time in my 996 GT3 and never ran into an issue. Maybe I am lucky.

Isn't there a lot of talk about only getting half the oil out? But of course you would have that info for us all. You are awesome!

Yeah, there is a bunch of irrelevant conversation as we figure things out, but there are also excerpts from workshop manual that show how to do the oil change.

Here’s a thread from 991.2 GT3 RS that reinforces my thinking it’s smart to change plugs frequently (book says every 12k miles or 2 years, whichever’s first).

Thanks for that thread point. I am doing mine in December. First time changing plugs on an engine other than my lawnmower.

@GrantG i see several different models of the 4766 socket, some have a built in knuckles. Which one do you recommend now that you've done the job?

FYI the Austin Porsche dealer quoted 4K for plugs and air filters. I presume bumper has to come off for air filters, but if I can do the plugs myself, I will go that way.

I mentioned Hazet 4766-2 in the first post and that has worked well for me. There are cheaper ones that will surely work too, but I'm a sucker for German tools and this is the one specified in the Workshop Manual. Maybe some of the other 4766 variants work as well or better, but I haven't tried any others (be careful as not all of the 4766 variants are for the same size spark plug, i.e. the regular 4766 without the "-2" will not fit).

This is the socket I have:

I do find some wobble extensions of various lengths are helpful. $4k for plugs and air filters is crazy. BTW, the air filters have much longer change interval than the plugs (24k miles or 4 years, whichever first).

Get this one or similar(I'm not advertising for this socket manufacturer or this website selling it) and thank me later. I know from experience :
-swivel-less chances of breaking the spark plug by not engaging it correctly
-thin wall
-rubber insert to hold spark plug

You're welcome.

You're welcome.
Just ordered the one above from Fcpeuro.

The cheap BELEY 14mm 3/8 inch Magnetic
Swivel Drive 12 Point Spark Plug is junk. It’s in the recycle bin.

My first 992 is scheduled for July delivery and I don't have access to a manual.

I have owned two 991.2's and the service interval on spark plugs was 4 years for essentially the same engine. Has the spark plug change interval really been cut by 50% and why? Increased dealer profit?

I think it’s to keep the steel plugs from seizing in the aluminum heads (galvanic corrosion) - no anti-seize permitted on threads. I’ve seen 991.2 plugs that were toast in less than a year, btw…
