Umm, I think Techron goes in the fuel. (Although Techron in the sump could help "clean things out".)

Not quite. On the 991.2, your first service is included in your purchase. It's also listed on the configurator that way.

I've used the Techron fuel additive myself, though not in my Porsche. However, this sentence suggested to me that this was some sort of oil additive variant. Why else run it "right before the oil change."

Also, the free first service started with the 2018 991.2s.

I'm going to change the oil every 5000 miles i think. Dealer said most guys go full distance of 10,000 miles.
I hope to keep my car for a long time .

Once a year oil change if u don't hit the recommended mileage (oil looses property with time) within a year is what is recommended generally. I follow that for my 991.2 C2S and I purchased (Mar '16), not leased, and intend to own the car for a long time.
Completely agree. I always find it funny/interesting how many people like to second guess Porsche engineers and create their own more frequent oil change schedule.

As was posted above, Porsche has Zero to gain - and only a ton of liability - by recommending longer than required oil change intervals!

Unless you’re tracking the car regularly, there’s no reason to change your oil more frequently than suggested by Porsche.

Synthetic oil is just much better than what your grandpa put in his Olds. There is actually a school of thought that the filter and oil need time to ‘break in’, and don’t reach optimal effectiveness until you’ve used it for a while. By changing them out too often, they never work as intended.

Ultimately, if owners feel better changing their oil every 5000 miles, fine: do what makes you happy! But it’s not required.

But it is still going on with some manufacturers of low cost cars/engines and still using mineral oil, Toyota for example... my colleague took his for an oil change and I was staggered that Toyota want it changed every 5k or 5mo, And their advertising boasts how other manufacturers require 3k intervals! I thought I was reading something from the '80s.

I would love to see a UAO on a 991 engine that's gone 20K since its last change. Genuinely curious how it'd look.

You're right in that if for instance the engine were going to blow up by only changing every 10k, Porsche would not and could not recommend that long of an interval. However if changing every 10k might wear the engine down to needing a rebuild in say 200k miles vs 300k... trust me Porsche and their engineers DGAF.

Changing your oil at 5k costs basically nothing... $85 maybe? And after 5k miles the oil is visibly very dirty. Maybe doesn't matter much but I'd rather prolong engine life when the cost is insignificant compared to TCO and it's ridiculously easy to do.

What toyota uses mineral oil? Every toyota I know of uses 0w20 synthetic.

The time based service on some items is a bigger issue for me. On oil, I can live with 1 year or 10k. The 425 my dealer charges is another matter.

For things like air filters and spark plugs, they push to do that on 4 year old cars regardless of mileage which is insane.

The reason for this is that “some” of the Techron will make its way past the piston rings and end up in the oil....so adding Techron before your oil change and running the tank to reserve or so will then eliminate nearly all the Techron that has bled past the rings.

Been doing this for at least 20 years on all the vehicles I have and had.
