High taxes does not stop rich folks from spending. When taxes are too high, like in France, people leave. I don't think U.K. would ever tax too highly. The government would have a lot to lose.

We are planning a trip to the UK in September, my fathers wife is from the Cotswolds, will be our first trip to Europe. Any suggestions on "must see" things that are not the typical tourist destinations?

i would not be a good person to ask because I'm not native and we are not here long enough to do anything outside of touristy activities. The free parks and the British museums have been good so far. We are staying at the Hyatt Regency at the Churchill. Great hotel near Marble Arch. The best restaurant has been Roti Chai. It's really 2 restaurants in 1. Indian street food upstairs and dining room downstairs. We are using Uber everywhere. I know the Tube is a more authentic experience, but it's not much more expensive for a family of 3.
Still on my list. I made it to the GW Festival of Speed a few years ago. A truly incredible event, both the cars and the drivers present. And seeing some fast driving was an extra thrill.
