Just reporting back after completing my repair. I opted to repair both sides even though the driver's side seemed to be in perfect condition. 90% of the work is removal and replacement of the spoiler so I thought it was prudent to proactively reinforce the unbroken side so the R&R never needs to be done again. I opted to buy a bar of aluminum from Lowes for $4.50 and cut it to length with a hack saw. Then I used two pairs of pliers to bend it and then twist it to mate up to the two surfaces. My spoiler was fully operational when I started this, but it may have been destined to malfunction at some point. The biggest win was that terrible and elusive rattle is now gone! Finally!!!

Default Repair done

Just did both as both were broken seems, like an obvious design flaw.
Now for the serious question. If you sell the car what do you say about this repair?

I don't think I would say anything. Not that there's anything to hide. I mean, this fix is better than new and should be permanent. I did the new owner a favor, but I don't see it as a selling point as it may leave some buyers with doubts or questions.

Does replacing the entire assembly with a new one also fix permanently or does it remain problematic even after that? Did they update the part with a better housing?

The part has been updated. Both of mine, 2012 C2S, were broken and one spring got twisted/bent beyond repair. old one was listed for $1560 at the discount dealers. New one $2700 discounted to ~$2300.
No old ones available.
I just ordered a new one. I hope the new ones are redesigned to be more robust. We will see. If not a “Macgyver” bracket is going on both sides.

Thanks! Did the part number change and do you have old and new part numbers? I think I am in the exact situation as you. Springs now beyond repair and forced to order a new assembly + reinforce it with this fix upon installation.

The old part # 991 504 041 03
new as of 1/21 # 991 504 041 04

Also may need:

Part# 991-624-353-00 has been updated it is the Grommet that fastens the plastic Fan cover that has 3.4 or 3.8 printed on it to the body of the car The new number is 9P1-959-841.

Part# 958-110-673-00 fastens the fans to the fan cover.

Thanks for the great information. If you have not yet installed the new part, could you please post pictures of the areas that usually break on the old version of the part? Trying to understand if the new version of the part has made the springs holders areas more robust or if they still as crappy as the old ones.

I have a 2015 Targa 4S with the same issue and the dealer told me it was the microswitch in the motor and replacement was $4200. The drivers side would not completely retract and then occasionally it would, only have 9K miles on the car. To me it sounds like something was binding and sometimes I could hear a snap when someone would hold the button to operate. Long story short the end of the coil spring was catching the lifting arm and binding it. For now I just rotated the spring and looking for an answer on what it does and where is the end suppose to be. I will also inform the dealer of there bad evaluation and see what they say.

Reading thru the post I now see the fix. I'm sure the fact my springs that flop around and I can easily rotate I need the repair. Better than the Chandler Porsche telling me $4200 for a bad motor that I don't need. The spoiler still works but does anyone know the purpose of the springs?

Is there a way to view this spring region with the spoiler attached just to verify that all is well? Would a good thing to be able to assess prior to warranty expiration. Although extended warranty would cover that.

When the spoiler is up you can reach in with you fingers and see if there just flopping around on the shaft that runs thru them. If you can move them chances are your plastic housing is broken.

Thanks. I’ll check. Maybe by MY19 they figured out the dispensing is lousy but probably not.
