I think someone has posted that that a 10 db difference is a doubling of the sound pressure. That is consistent with my impression of the sound difference.

In a perfect world, these cars would be as loud as they are (for the buyers who like then that way) an for the rest of us, there would be a switch to turn on an active noise cancellation system to quiet the car down on less than perfect roads. That way, every one wins.
Just an fyi: 3 db is a doubling, or a halving of a sound level.

No. 10 dB(A) is approximately twice perceived loudness (psychoacoustics).

3 dB is approximately a doubling of power, but not perceived loudness.

Perhaps your car is the exception, or the radar gun was off--hardly impossible. But I run with an Escort 9500ix, which has GPS and my normal display is vehicle speed and at just about every speed, the Escort is reading two mph lower than my 991.2's speedometer.

Hey all, I was wondering if anyone has ever tried Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires. Are they very different from a noise standpoint? I know they'll wear faster, and won't be good in the rain, but I was wondering how they'd do regarding noise.

I had cup 2s on my 991 RS, the car was pretty loud with plenty of engine noise and background road noise due to the lack of sound deadening but the ride was very good for such a stiff car and the tyres didn't make any horrible noises over rougher tarmac even when quite worn. I may well try some one my GTS when i wear through the std pirellis.

Correct.

Anyone tried the new Pirelli tires? I have a warranty for dry rot on mine and will likely replace with these since I can get then for >300 installed/all in for 4 with the warranty claim.

Really want Michelin PS4...

I'm a huge Michelin fan. Just replaced the Goodyears on my wife's X3 with Michelin MXM4 and the ride quality as well as noise difference is astonishing.

The August issue of Car and Driver has a test of five tires in this category:

Continental ExtremeContact Sport
Goodyear Eagle F1 Asymmetric 2
Hankook Ventus V12 EVO2
Michelin Pilot Sport 4 S
Pirelli P Zero

They were tested on a BMW 430i Grand Coupe in size 245/40-18. The overall winner was the Michelin 4 S with the best dry performance and second best wet performance. The Continental was second with the best wet performance and second best dry performance (by a small increment). The P Zero didn't perform all that well but was third due primarily its low price (at least in this size) and best ride.

In the noise category, all three tires measured between 66 and 69 dBA in the cockpit, with the Hankook the quietest and the Goodyear the noisiest. There was also a subjective rating for sound quality and in this one the Michelin was the best and the Hankook was the worst.

Based on this test, the Michelin still seems like the tire to get unless you live in Seattle and dry often in the rain. Too bad Michelin doesn't make the 4 S in the 19-inch sizes for the 991.2.

old thread, i know...but,

IMO, replacing old tires with new ones of a different manufacture is of little assistance in determining anything about the differences between tires. so i ignore posts starting out with something like "i just replaced...".

it's sort of like saying the same thing about wives....give it time..

It's true... I complained about the old P-zeros on my car and how good the replacement michelins were, when new, but once older they were just as loud.. I also had assumed the 991 was better on tires noise, I was wrong also, the 911s have been loud on used tires since they've been water cooled. Maybe before but you could not tell with the aircooled racket ;-)

I just ran this experiment with Yoko Advans. I replaced only the rears, and the cabin noise seemed to drop by half.
