I am new to this forum and am contemplating purchasing a 991.
Just a little history, I have owned many Porsches in the past ( I am 65yo).
In the '70's I had a 914 2.0 and two 912's. I had two mid 80's 911 Carreras, a targa and a coupe that I auto crossed. My last Porsche was a 1990 Carrera 2. I sold the last car when my kids started driving. Another story.
Anyway, I am going to buy another 911 and have some questions. I won't track the car, but will be using it for my DD and traveling with my wife on road trips.
I am leaning towards a '17 911 base, but have interest in '15 GTS's. I understand the '15 is na and the '17 has turbos. Actually I like the midrange of the turbo cars that I have owned.
1. any difference in maintenance or dependability between the two?
2. would the na GTS be much more to drive?
3. The GTS's that I have looked at have sport PASM while the '17 base has standard PASM. Is there a significant difference in ride between the two?
Welcome. I've also owned a range of 911's going back to a SWB car. The 991 is in a different world in terms of performance and comfort than the air-cooled cars (but the air-cooled cars are still more fun to drive IMHO).
1) The .2 engine is too new to judge, but so far so good.
2) The .2S is faster than a .1 GTS, without question.
3) Not really. Tiny difference in ride height.
Unless you're looking for the .2's additional power, IMHO the .1S is an outstanding deal. You can get a near-perfect car for a little more than half sticker price.
Pour a glass of wine or beer, sit in your favorite reading chair, grab your tablet and read through as much of STGs Hot For Sale thread as you can. A great education in buying used. And whilst I agree that the GTS is a great car and that used ones will be like new, prices are still hovering in the 32-37% off MSRP range for the most part. Still a great value, but from what I've observed buy prices are typically above 100k.
If your looking at a .2 base, the .1 GTS should be similar as far as being fast (both cars have plenty of speed on tap). They just get the speed in different ways.
The .2 is a better DD from what I've read as they've quieted the cabin a bit and the ride is supposedly better than the .1.
The GTS is gonna be a bit more raw than the .2. The howl of a .1 sounds pretty amazing.
Best bet is Drive both and see which you like best.
Tough call. Both are great cars. You need to drive both and see if the increased civility of the 991.2 or the amazing soundtrack of the 991.1 GTS wins it for you. SPASM ride height is definitely noticeable but so is the degradation in ride quality (at least on the .1). In terms of speed I suspect it will be close between a new base and a .1 GTS.
The new turbo cars make speed easily attainable whereas the older NA cars required you to wind them up. It's a big difference in philosophy. If you want to be the first car away from the light I suspect any .2 will provide that without breaking 3k (esp w PDK). The .1 cars just don't do that but I enjoy revving mine up and hearing the sound - much prefer it to the turbo whooshing. That said if cost wasn't an issue I probably would have gone .2.
As a DD, I would recommend the .2. I don't have enough seat time in the .1 but the GTS is supposed to be a wonderful car with a niche following. I have SPASM and while I like the lowered look, I hardly ever engage the button. I believe you will find the .1 GTS and the .2 C2S used price point to be similar. The used .2 C2 will be less.
You cannot go wrong with either one. Rely on your own judgement, no one really knows what you like/want but you.
