Default What Am I Missing - Coolant Cap

I am unable to remove the cap to check coolant level. It simply does not turn. The engine was stone cold from being parked overnight. Is there some trick that I am missing. My car is 18 months old and I never tried to remove it before. I reread the manual and can't seem to find any answer. I hate to have to go to the dealer to solve this problem. Any advice is appreciated.

It is difficult to remove, as it "locks" in place when properly tightened. Just give is a good counterclockwise turn. Don't be afraid.

The 991 coolant cap is very easy to remove & secure compared to my prior Porsches, IMO. Mainly because there's no ambiguity regarding tightness (since it locks into place) and no worries about cross treading.

If you need any coolant (pretty common)....just add a few ounces of distilled water till the bobber reaches the middle zone. No need for actual coolant in a system with over 775 ounces. A flashlight will help you see the bobber......especially on a cabriolet.

Correct, it only turns about 1/2 turn. Then lift off. I suspect 991Carreradriver is hitting the stop/lock, and expecting it to continue turning. It does not. Turn 1/3-1/2 turn.....lift off.

You are absolutely correct. I turned counter clockwise and it stopped moving. I never thought to lift it off. I will try it as soon as the car cools down from my commute to the office. This is crazy stuff, I have owned 50+ cars and never had an issue with a "cap" of any kind.

Lex,
I finally removed it. On my car the cap does not work as you described. After forcing it to turn counterclockwise past the stop lock, it turned about 5 complete turns and screwed off. Strange that there would be two different cap systems on the 991.

Hey 991carreradriver, I owe you an apology. In researching some old threads for UGLYOKI, and his recent coolant loss, I found this old thread. I gave you bad info about the coolant cap. Mine unscrews just as you stated above. The stop lock is key for both opening and closing. I like this cap very much, as compared to the old style on the 996 and 997 series cars, which were bruttle to unscrew and easy to cross-thread.

Well I guess that settles the issue as to whether there are two different systems on the 991!
