It would also be a good idea to take a ride in a similar 991 with the 19" wheels before you commit, just to be sure the difference is worth the trouble. I wish I could help with the comparison, but I have never tested 19s and 20s on a 991 back-to-back on the same roads.

I don't think the DSC will work without PASM.

When I autocross I lower the tire pressures not raise them.

I think they recommend "full load" pressures because of gas mileage and the fuel economy targets they need to hit.

I purposely ordered my base 991.2 with the 19s in search of a quieter and smoother ride. My car came with the Yokohama Advans and the handling is terrific, the ride is fine in normal mode (and not bad in sport), but the road noise is very high.

It ranges from acceptable on the finest asphalt pavement to an incredible din on coarse concrete. Does anyone have a base 991.2 with the 19-inch Goodyears? The Porsche tire document "Summer Tire Overview," suggests that they might be a little quieter (by about 3 dB), though I don't know if that is an internal or drive-by measurement.

It also indicates that the 20-inch Pirellis generate about the same noise as the 19-inch Yokos, and in all cases, the wide rear tires are about 3 dB louder than the fronts.

It is a sports car, what are you looking for? I have a 991.2 and I find it too soft with the 19" winter wheels, the 20" wheels are perfect. If you want comfort perhaps you should look at a Panamera, or a Cayenne, or any of the luxury GTs out there, like the Maserati Granturismo. The 911 isn't a luxury GT car yet (although it seems it is unfortunately trending that way).

I live in the Bay Area. The roads here suck. I've owned many sport cars. If I wanted any of those cars, I would've bought them but I did not. This is my third Porsche. I'm an old fart now and just trying to get it smoother for me and the wife, that's all.

Roads make a big difference, obviously. I'm surprised SF has such poor roads considering the climate. In Canada we have 2 seasons, winter season and road repair season. I just turned 48 on the weekend, how old do I have to be to join the old fart club? I often feel like one.

You can't make a silk purse......... or so it goes.
You need a 911 with 19" wheels and PASM.
Even then, you will not rid yourself of the road noise, I have 20" and 19" wheel sets.
On rough roads the ride will still be less than tolerable for many.
To day on one 20 mile stech of HWY 60 in Wisconsin I had to stay at 40-45mph in a 55mph zone because of the rough road with 19" winter tires.-Richard

My test drives were (sorry, I don't recall which tires):
  • 991.2 with PASM and 19"
  • 991.2 with PASM and 20"
  • 991.1 with PASM and 20"
  • 991.1 without PASM and 20"

The order above is also ranked by comfort, 991.2 with 19" and PASM (can't get without PASM) was my choice. I'm generally not a friend of large wheels anyways, but the difference was enough for me to definitely go for the 19".

The 991.2 with 20" was also noticeably quieter and smoother on the same roads than the 991.1 with PASM and 20", but that might have been due to different tire brand or age or pressure. Although I checked pressure during some of my test drives and it was all in the same ballpark.

And yes, SF Bay Area roads absolutely suck. Concrete and cheap repairs make it hard to live with.

I put 4 of the new Michelin Pilot sport 4S on my targa. 20" Carrera wheels....wow what a huge improvement in ride quality. Best on a 911 ever.

Did you replace Pirellis? How about road noise? Any change there?

We can argue about the merits of suspension stiffness on a sports car, but does anyone like road noise? I find it completely disagreeable, especially as it tends to mask the engine noises that most of us like.

With the highest taxes and I think the second highest percentage of super rich people in the country, SF could absolutely fix their roads. But they don't want to, because they don't want you to have a car.

The climate is awesome, it's the politics. Also you are far from joining the Old Fart Club lol
