The manual gives different break in procedures for the 991.2 compared to the 991.1. Previously the wording gave "hints" and "tips". Now the wording says "must be run in".

991.2 Running in the vehicle

991.1 Break in hints for the first 2,000 miles

The 9A2 engine uses plasma beam iron-coated cylinder liners for reduced fuel and oil consumption. Maybe this new technology requires, or possibly requires, different run in procedures.

I wonder if ROW manuals say the same thing?

Default Hp vs speed

Porsche has published the torque/power curves versus RPM for the cars, along with the gear and rear axle ratios. I thought it might be interesting to use this data to replot power versus speed in each gear. I used the MPS4S rear tire size of 764 revs per mile.

For max acceleration, redline shifts appear appropriate in the first three gears, and then slight short shifts seem to be required for the next two gears. Redline speeds in each gear for the S are slightly less due to the larger rear axle ratio.

The 3l twin turbo engine as found in the base, S and GTS was awarded International engine of the year 2017 (2.5l - 3l)

http://www.ukimediaevents.com/engine...ults.php?id=66

and

http://www.ukimediaevents.com/engine...s.php?id=ieoty runner up to the mill in the 488GTB in the open category.

I drove the 488GTB and the engine response and delivery was exceptional - I felt the 3l bi turbo flat six was right up with it.

Nice to see a panel of experts agrees

WHP - MAHA DYNO (SPORT AUTO) . 991.2 GTS and 991.2 GT3

Note the limited difference in peak HP (364 Vs 38) as delivered to the wheels and (importantly) the shape of the peak curves..

From Sport Auto - Maha Dyno plot 991.2 GTS (run down losses (green), WHP (blue), calc crank HP(red) and torque(orange)).

Just found this old thread on a search, surprised it stopped getting posts. As the title could just as accurately be "9A2 3.0 Owners", it has good focused data and links, still relevant to the pool of active/recent 991.2 Carrera buyers (new leftovers, late allocations and CPOs) which includes me-- so thanks to the original contributors.

Coming from another 9A2-gen P-car (718 Boxster S) which had me poking around here and ************.com, I'm already familiar with most of the thread content, but was able to save off a few good graphics. My path to the 9A2 3.0 has been:
928S4>Ferrari 328GTS>996.1>996.2>987S>982S>991.2 Carrera S

Here's another data point (my favorite) for the S: Willow Springs lap time 1:27:10 https://fastestlaps.com/tracks/willow-springs

Honestly thought I was past being this impressed by another Porsche.....

Default 991.2 Noise after start up

Hello Folks,

Just got a 2017 991.2 with PDK. It is a 2 year lease car with CPO and 18K on it.

After the car is first started there is a lot of noise that is mechanical for the first 30 seconds or so when at fast idle. Then, once that cats are lit, the car goes to normal idle speed and the noise disappears.

I assume this is the various engine systems working to get the cats up to operating temp ASAP. However, I have lots of other cars, and they do not exhibit this type of mechanical noise during the initial warm up phase.

I have seen posts that seem to state this is normal, but would like to confirm.

Thanks,

Marc

Yup, normal. I usually wait 'till the RPM settle at ~800 before starting off. Just enough time for the oil to circulate everywhere.

Thanks guys for all your confirmations. I really appreciate it.

Now, I want find out just why. Just curious as I started out my career as a tech, and am still ASE master certified.

Will post whatever I learn, as I still have some contacts within the VW group. Sounds like much more than a noisy air pump.
