I was wondering, which one would you go for?
I am driving 2006 997 C2S now, but thinking about upgrading it.
Have driven E92 M3 and F30 3 series in the past.
I know I am in Porsche forum, but I will ask same questions to Bimmer forum to see how opinion diversify.
Thanks in advance!

Without a doubt, the 911 is a much, much better car. I went round and round and round trying to decide what to do...buy a new C63S, M3 Comp Pack or a used 911. And believe me, this was a decision made over a year, driving multiple examples of each. And it was a hard decision.
I'm not the typical driver. I work on a construction site every day, and while I'm not a construction worker, I drive the project in my own car, go in and out of buildings under construction, etc. I don't just show up and park the car in an office parking lot and see it 10 hours later (thankfully!). So the choice was....how impractical do I want to get and how badly do I feel beating the snot out of an $80k (my budget) car every day.
In the end, I ended up with the 911....and a GTI for my daily drive. Best of both worlds, but I understand not feasible for everyone. And not necessary. If my job entailed driving to an office, client meetings and lunch, I could easily rock the 911 as a daily driver. Very easily (except the cupholder thing, they suck). This was after literally going from the Merc dealer to the Porsche dealer to the BMW dealer all in 3-4 hours.
Keep in mind, this was a fully loaded M3 comp pack. Not even an M2 which, while fun, lacks performance compared to the M3.
I'd say 911 all day long, and I'd say it on a BMW forum too (I am still a BMWCCA member as well as a PCA member).

Never loved my E92 M3. Test drove the F80 and liked it even less.
You are in a 997 now and I understand the desire to try a new brand, but seriously there is no comparison between the 991 and the M2. The M3 competition pack is supposed to be pretty good, but it's still such a heavy car. Maybe a used GT-R or AMG C63?

BMW's are average... The M cars are above average... Porsche 911's are elite.
Ditto others I've had three M cars including two E92s and an F82, and eight 911's (911SC, 964, 993, 996 x 2, 991.1 x 2, 991.2). Different league. I'm done trying M cars.

I am thinking used 991.1, year 2013 - 2014. It's market price is currently at $60k range which is almost close to new BMW M2.
If I compare new 911 vs new M2, I'd always go for 911 as well.
I know 991 is much better car than M2, but I need to be prepared for extra cost to maintain whereas new M2 is covered under factory warranty.

Maybe find a CPO 991, so you get some warranty.
Also the 991's are super reliable, that motor is very proven, and depending on mileage, the services are not that ridiculous. I just did my 40k service, which was on the pricier side ($800). If you are handy you can easily do it yourself.
Personally I would rather have the worst of the best (used base 911) than the best of the worst (suped up low end BMW)
I would drive both back to back and one will sing to you.
I was choosing between a new M4 and a used 991.1 Carrera S. Drove both back to back and just couldn't imagine myself in the M4 after driving the 911.

I crossed shopped those as well, because I am a porsche fan, but also a BMW 2002 guy. And the M2 is kind of the new Tii ;-) In the end I was put off by BMW dealer markups on the M2, refusal to test drive one etc (mind the Porsche dealer was just as bad but I bought used in the end)... I managed to drive one eventually elsewhere (by which time I think I already had the 991), it has more torque but it feels like a 335 kinda engine. Powerful, yesh, but not "special". I was not a fan of the driving position (high and slightly off center). The car is fast. I just felt that for the money, the 991 was a purer sports car and a hell of a looker in comparison. The Bimmer felt like a fun toy, say a boosted RWD GTI, the 911 felt like a proper sports car. I like both, but side by side no contest for me...
PS: that's no slight to the GTI, I still tell everyone that asks that a GTI is all the car anyone ever truly needs..

I agree. I'm loving mine and it's still sitting in the garage waiting for my Lexus to go off lease. Only about 110 miles on it since I got it 3 weeks ago. That'll change soon, though.

Our local dealers have a couple USED M2 selling for $78k-80k (Canadian dollar) compare to brand new at $65k-70k. They'll tell you the wait list to get one at MSRP is very very long and the car will most likely to APPRECIATE in $$$. I think it's a nice little fun car but the way these dealers are trying to market/sell them turns me off completely.
If you are ok with the maintenance costs and everything else with your recent 997, you should do just fine with a pre-owned 991.1

I had a tuned F30 335i before my 991.1 C4S and I think apart from straight line speed, every other variable feels like a major upgrade.
