Default PROVEN Trafck Wheel/Tire Combo for 991

I'm running myself crazy trying to find a wheel/tire package to run on my 13 991 c2s that is PROVEN. 18" or 19", I don't care, but I want to use R compound tires. Can anyone recommend a good PROVEN set up for 991?

Thanks, R Rated. Also looking for exact sizes on the tires.

I posted a very similar thread last week on this topic.

#1: 18" wheels don't fit the 991.

#2: The exact size replacement in 19" is 245/40/19 and 295/35/19 of which only Michelin Pilot Super Sport is available. Not the sportiest of track tires...

#3: Running slightly smaller overall diameter tires in 19" (<3% variation from stock) opens up more tire choices. Sport Cup 2, Corsas, NT05, etc. This sizing would be 255/35/19 and 305/30/19.

After PM'ing with members who have used this smaller diameter 19" setup with success, I've determined it's the route I'm going. Yes, the speedo will read a few MPH off, no biggie. Until someone offers a good R comp or max performance tire in the proper 19" size replacement, I'm going to run one of the above choices in the 'wrong' sizes.

I've reached the same conclusion, going 19" with Toyo R888R tires. Note that you can set the wheel diameter in the MFD. I haven't done this yet but I understand it takes care of the speedometer difference.

Not that I think the manual is gospel, but the OEM fitment for a 19' rear wheel is 285/35/19. Unfortunately, there are not many of alternatives that fit this spec. Best are the MPC2 and Bridgestone RE71.

Why not try out a set of R101's or R101 Lightweight wheels! Here's a few shots of that wheel on a GT3 Cup Car blasting around the track.

Here's a few pictures on a GT3 to give you a visual of how they look on road cars:

Both the R101 and the R101 Lightweight will come with standard knurling on the tire bead seat to help prevent tire slippage in extreme motorsport situations. Both options are extremely light, but obviously the R101 Lightweight will be the most light of all:

For 991 Narrowbody:
20x9 - 16.50lbs
20x11.5 - 19.40lbs

For 991 Widebody:
20x9 - 16.50lbs
20x12 - 19.60lbs

Jurrian, those wheels above look great but are likely quite pricey for track wheels and also don't come in the requisite 19" sizes sought after in this thread.

For those using a track wheel setup, do you find it beneficial to add TPMS to the wheels? I'm debating. I always check manually after a session but of course this info would be handy to have while actually running on track. I just wasn't sure how accurate/helpful they were. I'm leaning towards having them installed.

Uhhhh....yes, $10k for a set of track wheels isn't the track day option I was going for (however, I love those HRE wheels). Here's what I am going with after much research:

Forgestar CF5 in race gold @ 19x9 front and 19x11 rear with Toyo Proxes R888R in 265/30/19 front and 305/30/19 rear. I am not doing TPMS as I do all the PSI manually at each session.

The Forgestars are very reasonable at $1700/set and while not fully forged they are flow forged barrels and many in the community have used them for track services for years with no problems. Also, they are made to order, so I can get the exact OEM offset (or add 10-12 mm for a more flush appearance) and not bother with any spacers. Weight is just below/at OEM wheel weight which I am not thrilled about, but given the prices of wheels that save any significant amont of weight, I think they are a reasonable trade.

Here's a few pics of the wheels. I'll post pics of them on my car in 6 weeks or so when they come in an I put them on for my DE down at COTA in early May.

Thanks again for all the help guys.

I don't think track wheels and Forgestar are mentioned in the same breath very often. There are many stories about their quality all over forums that you might want to look into. Questions about where they are manufactured (China possibly) is another thing to consider.

HRE's are the industry standard. Yes, they cost a little more but you're buying into the best. Would never need another wheel, for the track or street, ever again.

"Flow Forged" is FAR from forged and trickery marketing propaganda... I'd not trust those wheels for regular use.... much less track use. Unfortunately there is no cheap way out for a solid track wheel.

You'd be far better off with these:

Those are great!

The title is asking for proven. The only thing proven about forgestar is that they will crack.

OK, thank you. That's what is great about this forum -- people can save others from making costly mistakes. I really appreciate the insight and will re-focus my efforts on thos OZ's and BBS CH-R. At least I have the tires figured out!
