Default 6 so vs 7 so

Why does the 911R have a 6 sp trans and all the other manual 911s have 7sp? I just don't see the need for a 7 sp manual?

Different gearing.

7 speed was designed for MPGs and efficiency.

6 Speed was designed to go vrooom vroooooooom.

Its about weight reduction. The six-speed setup is based on the seven-speed manual used on the standard 911 Carrera, but it’s 7 pounds lighter. Also, 7th gear is for highway economy, and my guess is most people buying the R don't care much about gas mileage in that car.

I heard nobody bought one and they were all reserved for the elite within the Scientology cult.

Are the boxes actually geared differently, or is the R box just the 991 manual sans 7th? Have never gotten clarity on this.

I imagine it also has to do with raising the EPA MPG rating as high as possible for the fleet averages that Porsche has to hit to keep the EPA (and other country equivalents) happy. There are enough non-R manuals out there that tweaking the MPG rating up a little by having the overdrive gear makes a difference in the overall averages, but there are so few R cars that they don't have much statistical effect.
