When my daughter was 14 my brother also had a 996; this was in 2003 and it was a new car. He had trouble with the infamous 2nd gear pop-out and Porsche was replacing the transmission and clutch under warranty. But a new one had to make its way to Atlanta and that took a few days or weeks. During that time, my brother taught my daughter how to drive and how to use a clutch -- on his 2000-mile 911!
She'd learn more quickly now, almost all cars are PDK.
Great thread! Pic of us picking up our .1 GTS Targa CXX at the factory in Stuttgart. (Junior was 4 months then.) Got the distinct impression that they don't see customers drive off with a baby seat in the back
Brought this sticker to Germany with us and applied it before the car was even 24 hours old.
Knowing we'll be logging miles with family trips, I even had several non-traditional parts of the car PPF'd including the hardback seats and targa bar for peace of mind.
I really appreciate the way this thread is developing. To me this is what makes a 911 so extra special, and why they really need to leave the engine where it is and keep it a +2. Part of the 911's mystic is that it is amazingly practical and arguably a family car. A sports car with two seats (my Cayman S) ended up feeling like a selfish thing. Dad has his toy, etc. The 911 is totally different, it can be shared and enjoyed by the family, and that makes it a part of everyone's lives and memories, not just mine. That's one of the reasons I'm a complete loyalist to the 911.
Keep them coming, it's great to see our cars getting enjoyed by all!
^^^ this. It's a date car for my wife and I. A track car for me and a family car to pick up the kids. How much more versatility could you ask for in a sports car.
Mine was with us the day we picked up the Boxster and opted to ride home with me, rather than mom (in the Cayenne).
And has been exploring with me since she was little. She loved the Jeep and looks forward to our next one. She'll learn to drive a stick in my Ram 2500 (diesel), though. And knows she's not driving the Boxster until she can drive the truck.
