Thank you for the help with an older thread. I am hoping it was an intermittent issue, but it looks like others have had the same problem. It was literally right when I started the car, so it couldn't have been overheated.....

Nope, you can get used ones on eBay but it looks like they're around 1-2k ea and you need to add labor for coding and component protection removal.

But, porsche sells the PCM4 software on an SD card (9P1-906-961) and the hardware is identical to VW discover pro / Audi MIB2 which you can buy for less than $200. I'm not sure what the procedure is to flash MIB2 to PCM4, but that would probably be the cheapest option to replace the PCM as these cars start going out of warranty.

Edit: not sure what year your car is, but if you are having this issue with PCM3.1 then you probably won't have luck finding a cheap replacement since the hardware is specific to Porsche. You might want to replace the PCM's cooling fan if you are receiving overheating messages.

PCM died in the first two weeks I owned mine and then again about 3 mos after the warranty expired. PCNA covered 95% of second repair. The units are unreliable and Porsche knows it!

I got the "Overheating" message on my PCM screen first thing this morning, just after starting the car. The PCM shut down, and re-booted itself without a problem. I wonder if a weak battery could be at fault, as I still have the original battery in my 2015 991.1 C2. . . or possibly it's just a computer going bad, just as my old desktop PC did this week, refusing to even turn on. Based on the above comments, I favor the latter.
