I've had this battery and a previous one (other car, same story - bimmer) self replaced and never bothered asking the dealer to reprogram. Did the battery die sooner ? I don't know, 3 yrs later it was still fine... How can you tell ? I'm not worried about it but I'm not in a position to offer certainty either way... you do what makes you feel better !
