Recall speaking with Paul Champagne regarding thickening the steering wheel on the 94 928 GTS. He stated best way is to wrap right over exisiting cover. http://www.designpaulchampagne.com/928Steering.html T
Now you guys have me 2nd guessing my decision to get an alcantara wrapped wheel. I haven't pulled the trigger on it yet, so im not sure where to go from here. I feel like my leather wheel is too skinny/slick (I have BIG hands)
Nah, it's very cool. Just know it won't last forever, and don't let your wife touch it if she just lathered cream on her hands like women always do!
Alcantara looks great when new but it wears very quickly at 9 & 3 on the wheel... if you are holding it properly.
This was my GT3 Alcantara wheel with 12k km (7.4k Miles). Clearly showing wear at the hold points. No amount of "proper care" as prescribed on the Alcantara web site helped much. It is what it is.
I drive 15k+ miles per year in my 991, and it only took 5 seconds of seeing high mileage Porsches/BMWs with completely bald Alcantara seats/wheels for me to never want one.
Alcantara looks good on some parts of the car, like the headliner and A pillars, etc but I would never get it on a steering wheel for the reasons noted above
Trade or send your wheel to http://www.dctms.com/product_ST_PCH_997_987.html They don't have any 991 wheels posted but you can have it recovered or modified like the 997s shown or any way you want.
I only have about 6k miles on my car but the wheel is perfect. Very grippy. Do you use hand cream? Does your wife drive the car? (Nothing worse than getting into my wife's car and putting my hands on her steering wheel. (She's a serial moisturizer.). I'm thinking something got on your wheel to make it oily. Before doing anything major try cleaning with this and brush when dry. Should come out like new like new.
The alcantara used by BMW and Porsche is not the same material. The latter wears far better.
That could be true. Alcantara is a registered trademark for a specific brand/type of material. There are other types of this material in the market. They look similar, but are different products. I don't know what material BMW uses, but it could be something other than Alcantara.
Thanks again everyone! I'll see how it goes once the weather warms up. I'd likely drive with gloves in the winter anyway. Changing the wheel is one thing, but I'd also have to change the MT shifter too so it all matches. I researched this before I spec'd it but didn't see any complaints about slipperiness. No I haven't cleaned it or gotten anything on it.
