K40 Radar and Laser worth installing over others similar devices
Interesting installer recommends the K40 with radar and laser diffuser. he doesn't recommended the rear laser . He says most time a rear shot is throw out of court.
Is the k40 worth it?

I got got hit with a laser once and it saved my *** the cop wagged his finger at me as I passed by him but I know I was doing 80 when the laser warning went off.

The Installer recommended the K40 RL200i . Its all integrated and stealth with 1 blue light. But I think the Rl360i would give me more comfort. Curious what did they charge you for the install, etc. I don't have a plate in front either. So its laser and radar.

I need to double check which one I have and the previous owner installed it so it came free with the car. I think he said he paid about 2500 total.

The K40 system is okay for radar but the laser section is terrible — I wouldn't recommend their systems. A lot of installation shops will recommend K40 because margins on that product are a lot higher than anything else in the category.
If you want the best value, go for a portable like Valentine1 or Escort MAX360 along with an AL Priority Laser System. The V1 can even be connected to the ALP for alerts and control. If you're after the absolute best performance solution, go for a Beltronics STiR+ with AL Priority Laser. Having years of experience in the use, install, and manufacturer side of the radar/laser industry, I will definitely say that Escort/BEL has the most "livable" radar detectors in existence. The GPS false lockout logic is invaluable in retaining one's sanity.

My ALP system cost $1800 installed and the Max 360 another $600. Guess I got off cheap and have better protection. With Dragon Eye being produced in the US, more and more LEA are going to it. The problem with the K40 is it will tell you when you were hit, not jam it.

Seems mixed reviews on K40. In March I hear the new escort CI 360 max will be out and it should be a Stealth install and my preferred installation. So maybe wait till then.

I liked mine
I'm in Colorado and with the proper settings and my city driving, I loved my old K40.
I had the laser shifters as well. They were setup with a cutoff switch so I could get to speed and shut the system off quicker than the default setup.
After selling the old car, I wished I removed the setup and put it in my 991.
Now that I'm running my old V1 I'm having issues. I can't stand this thing anymore. I've basically given up. The V1 is completely on permanent mute. I used to be able to mentally deafen the sound and now I can't.
So...
Moving forward I'm looking at the AL Priority. They now have 360 degree radar and "parking assistance" with notification if it's messing with any outside signals. GPS is an option to mark locations and speed as well. After spending time on the detection/jamming forums, it looks like the old name brands (escort/k40/bell/etc) are no longer the best. They just have the best marketing still.
I'd recommend looking at the test results and seeing how cool the new products are for yourself. Times have changed.

Being a system designer for our local clients, my job is to make sure I know more about the practical use and effectiveness than most others. Aside from what Escort has released at CES that's not quite yet available, the BEL STiR+ and ALP combo is still the best livable and effective combo.
A radar detectors job is to give us early warning, filter out as many false alerts as possible, and not be a complete nuisance on our daily commute. All three companies are comparable in the first category, and most of that hinges on proper installation of the antenna. The Net Radar seems to do the best in the false alert filtering, but only when it comes to BSD and ACC from other cars, so you still get all the grocery store and gas station sliding door alerts — which are the most annoying element.
The BEL and Escort radar pieces are the only system that passively and automatically lock out those alerts based on GPS location, which is why they still have my vote as the most livable systems in existence. That tech is still under patent lock with Escort and will remain that way for a good time. The problem with Escort is that they rely on other companies for their laser tech The original ZR4 shifters were theirs, but the next generation(3 or so years ago) was made by Laser Interceptor. They were great when they first came out but Escort never got the support necessary to keep them updated, which is why they don't perform as well as others right now.
The new Escort system will likely be the same way, and that's a smart move so long as they partner with a reputable company who cares a lot more about the relationship than LI did. Bottom line, if I were making a decision today it would still be BEL and ALP — but you might hold out a few weeks to see what Escort has in store for us.
Thats my 2¢
EDIT: @ _NITRO_ If your V1 is old, you should contact the company and see about getting them to upgrade the internals with the new DSP chipset. That will quiet it down a good deal and help a lot with the filtering. Pre-DSP V1's are almost useless nowadays.

Being an Engineer my background allows me to assess all the BS that's flying around about protection systems.
I want to know what my detector is picking up and the V1 now with the K-Band 'Junk fighter' works extremely well and has eliminated almost 100% of the highway false alarms due to vehicle radar systems. The only problem I enounter is from jammers which are fairly easy to detect as they move with you.
As to stealth, I drive in Wisconsin and Illinois and Law Enforcement could car less if you have a detector. Position height is king for line of sight sensitivity, so a BlendMount.
V1 is $400 and Blendmount less than $200 if I remember correctly.
V1 guts are upgradeable for the future. Had my 2003 V1 completely upgraded for $219 last year because of the Junk Band Fighter which I tested on a 2016 model I purchased.
V1's simply don't break, I went through two Escorts before purchasing a V1. both Escorts had multiple problems. Junk!
Note, my original PassPort designed by the current V1 company owner would still function if I could find another window mount albight without lazer detection!

Go to the V1 website for info on how to turn ON the Junk Band Fighter if you have it. If not, it's a $219 charge for new guts but you still have to turn the Junk Band fighter ON. Your problems will be solved, if not I will purchase your upgraded V1. I want another one for my XC70.
As to qualifications. most of what I read is gimmicky designed to seperate you from your money. These companies rely on you wanting to avoid points/money from Enforcement with no technology training to assess thier claims and the lack of your ability to test their claims. They are also hitting a psychological feeling that if it costs more, it's better and "I can afford it, so I should get it".
I haven't found anything that works better than a V1 at this time. If I did, I would have it.-Richard
BTW I have ACC on my C4S and the V1 is completely immune to it.
