sun roof weight

Even adding 20 lbs in that area is not ideal for a car like a 991. Auto glass is very heavy. I would be surprised if it isn't at least a 100 lb penalty over a SR delete.
Who knows??

If you want a sunroof, a steel one is the way to go. You still have the opening, but less of a weight penalty. I don't think you lose all that much headroom because the roof rises and opens on top of the roof on the outside of the car rather than under the roof inside.

It's weird that it's hard to get a straight answer from someone at Porsche. I have been told "minimal" to "over 100 lbs". I suspect that the glass sunroof is a pretty significant weight gain and that the reason Porsche doesn't give a straight answer is that it's an option that a lot of people spec and that it makes them a lot of money.

It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to work out that a 100kg+ (220lb+) glass roof running across the very top of the vehicle isn’t exactly the best idea. The reason they weigh so much is due to glass being a heck of a lot thicker and heavier than steel or aluminium roof panels, not to mention all the additional reinforcing bars, electric motors and drainage channels required.

No way it is that heavy. I do know the following for fact:
1. Going from moonroof to CF roof on e92 M3 saved you 45 lbs.
2. Changing moonroof to CSL CF roof on e46 M3 saved you 50 lbs.
There is no way the moonroof on 911 weights double or quadruple that. It is heavy, even at 40 lbs. That is like a case of 12 wines on your roof. I hate moonroof but could not find a car without it.All dealers spec it on their cars

I had the e92. The moonroof on the BMW was traditional sized- it was not a panoramic roof. The panoramic is uber sized.
When the 997 GT3 came out, there was a big backlash against the sunroof not being able to be deleted. At that time, the consensus was that the steel sunroof added about 50 pounds. It wouldn't surprise me that the glass is double that.https://rennlist.com/forums/997-gt2-...ht-issues.html

I took my glass roof off trying to fix a rattle and I would say the weight was around 15 to 20 pounds.

I doubt there's much consequence of the weight in a car with so many airbags, a tire inflator, 12 speakers, power seats, back seats, large wheels/tires, etc...even if it's up in the roof. If you're going to strip the interior out then maybe buy one without the sunroof...otherwise don't sweat it.

I have a 981B. I like sun and wind.
I ordered my 991.2 C4S without a sunroof because my wife does not like sun nor wind.
I am extremely happy with the lack of sun roof on the 991.2, nice head room, no squeaks or rattles and enough vent with the windows down around town.
I've had it up to 145mph with the windows down on Track but don;t know what the cabin is like because of the helmet.
My conclusion is, if you want sun and wind, get a Cab/Targa, if not, coupe no sunroof!-Richard

For performance, weight is bad, high weight is very bad. The 991 has horizontally opposed cylinders, which is a large benefit since it keeps the weight low.
The GT3 RS has a very expensive weight a saving magnesium sheet metal roof to save a few pounds.
Reports indicate the SR in Glass cars are not as stiff on the track in spite of the additional bracing built into the structure.
Every pound is important when driving near the performance limits, but since most cars never approach this threshold, the SR in glass makes sense for many people.

I agree totally. I have seen guys that weigh 100 lbs more than me go flying by!!! Driving ability is paramount, lightweight and high horsepower come in second. That is 2500 lbs with 550hp LS3
