Pending purchase thoughts

Pending purchase *bought GTS*
Facing major buying decision at the moment:
1) Wait for 991.2 GTS
2) Buy 2016 GTS
3) Buy 991.2 base
My hope is to hold the car for a long time (although that's usually my hope buying a new car but never seems to work out). Expensive habit.
New to Porsche after multiple BMW M cars lately, and only considering 7MT (although it's becoming harder and harder as time passes to resist much refined PDK).
-With new GTS expected any time now it's hard not to wait and see what's in store for the modified motor. I don't think Porsche will simply take the S engine and bolt on larger turbos so it will be interesting to see what's in store for new GTS. If, however, they do simply use larger turbos I'd easily narrow my options to 2 & 3.
-Found a 2016 GTS in Carmine Red with 4k miles, 7MT and warranty through 2021 but it has sunroof and doesn't have sport suspension. I really don't want a sunroof and really enjoy firmer setup and better look (10mm makes subtle change for the better appearance-wise). Although I like the color, black or silver suit me better. I'm afraid that after some time I will grow to dislike the red. Also, I have a trade and would lose out on $85k trade-in value tax savings.
-I loved the base car so much when I drove it that my first choice right now is to just spec one exactly as I want (7MT, PCCB, PSE, SC) and pull the trigger with local dealer who's made me a fair offer for my trade.
I'm a loose cannon so could very well cave and just buy 2016 GTS any day now, but also love suspense of waiting for new model and would be disgusted if I bought 2016 and Porsche got new motor in GTS right.
Any thoughts would be much appreciated.

I had the same thoughts prior to purchasing my GTS. Reading your comments however it seems you're not sure if you'll keep it for a long time or not. My guess is you won't. This would favor trading your car with that base model now and then possibly trading it (if you really want to) for a .2 GTS when it delivers. It might be a while before it hits the showroom and is ready for you to test drive it.
This is the only course of action that makes sense for you. There are no current GTSs that fit your needs and wants so that sort of rules out a .1 GTS.

I don't want all-wheel drive but love wider body lines, so no I'm not just looking for letters. I don't care what the letters are, just want to take 991 power kit motor and drop it in 991.2 GTS and have perfection. Let's see how close P can get.

There is supposed to be a new generation 911 coming at the end of 2018. If it was me, I'd get a base 991.2 and enjoy it until you see what the 991.2 GTS looks, sounds and drives like. Its not like the money spent on the base will have been wasted - after all you will be driving a great car - and if you option the car lightly and with popular options you are sure to get a good trade value when (if) you decide to trade/sell. As to "detrimental to retirement savings" if that is even a consideration, the whole Porsche thing should be a non starter (in my opinion).

My SA is a personal friend as well, and I've done business with him at two different Porsche dealers since 2002. When 991 was soon-to-be-released but details were thin on the ground, his story was: "Get a 997.2 -- the 991 will be 4" longer, the wheelbase will be longer, it will just be a cruiser, I'm sad to say." After 991 was released: "Oh man, you NEED to upgrade to a 991; the longer wheelbase makes it much quieter, it is easier on your tires, more stable in high-speed turns, blah blah blah." Before 991.2 came out, he was (admittedly, in agreement with me) lamenting the end of NA 911s and telling me I better get one of the last ones; you should hear him talk about the turbos now.

Not really if it's impossible to find one spec'd just the way you want it. The average used Porsche out there is a unique mix of options that doesn't appeal in it's entirety to anyone but the original buyer. Buying used means settling and there's something to be said for getting exactly what you want at these prices.
OP, if I was in your shoes, I'd go with the new base car. I've been pondering a similar decision related to a second car and if I go forward it's going to be a new C4 spec'd exactly the way I want.
