would you replace both tires?
Hey Larry. If they come with 10/32" new, and you have 5-6/32" left, you're at about 70% wear if you replace them before you have no tread left. My rears are down to 4/32" and I'll swap them out at 3/32"
Besides that, if you only replace one, you'll never have a pair of equally worn tires. When the new one gets down to 7/32", you'll have to swap out the older one.
Replace both and keep the other one for an emergency backup.

OK, change it to mm, ', yards. Doesn't matter. You've still gone through over 50% of the useful tread. You'll always have one tire with more tread than the other. That is of course unless you drive over another knife, pitchfork, stop-strip, etc.
Some tire shops can shave them to match if you ask them to (and if they know how). I know some people with 4S who needed new tires and don't want to replace all or both side had them shave them down to match. I believe Tire Rack can do that too if you give them the exact depth.
The point is well taken that you either decide to throw away a good tire to even them up now, or you do it at some future tire change, or you drive with uneven tires for the rest of the car's life. If you're going to have to do it eventually anyway, why not just even them up now? PM me, I'll shoot you a payday loan till next Friday if you need it.

but you are correct that I will always have one tire more worn than the other

since I have about 7-8/32 left on the drivers this time around I'll just keep it and replace the one with the knife cut in it ... but good to know for the future!

to break it in
