Worst case, you could always order a shaved tire from the Tire Rack to match the other, but still unnecessary.
I thought about that after the fact!

nah mostly highway, with one trackday, I measured the tread depth, its 6mm center/inside, and 5mm on the outside grove, I think I'm good once I wear in the new one, and replace both when the drivers side goes south in another 4-8k.

I wont mention the Corsa's on my GT3 ... now those *should* get replaced (with MPSC2's)

Remember, tire wear is not exactly linear. So, the new tire will wear in, and close the gap slightly.

This is a good question. I replaced one tire around 2-3K miles and the dealer said it was okay since the other was close to new.

But as an idea, if you are on the edge or uncertain, you could buy 2 and mount them, storing the good one. In case it happens again, you would have the spare to match depending on mileage.

I wanted to do this but my dealer felt it was not a safe option and was not willing to do it. Based on safety concerns, I was in agreement.

Seriously, do you good people get more than 8k out of rears? I once had a 986 Boxster S that I was able to stretch a little beyond that, but here it is when I hit 10,000 miles, long past where it should have been replaced:

911s have always been sub-10,000, closer to 8k.

I'm currently just over 7k on the first set of Pirellis on my GTS. They're very close. Going to the track Saturday just to finish them off.

I can easily get 15K. The set I'm on now have 17K and I plan to stretch to 20K no problem. But, I drive 200 easy highway miles to drive 120 miles of country roads, on a regular bases. So I get good tire wear. On my old 993 I was lucky to get 8-10. The 991 chassis is pretty kind to tires, IME.

That's what my gearhead friend and SA told me before purchase. So I've been a little disappointed that they wore down at the same rate as the other Porsches I've had.

Another option to check with your local used tire places OR ebay and just get a nice used tire. I try to keep a pair on hand at all times.

There are guys that make a business on retrieving tires from lease returns and re-selling the tires.

I have been doing this with all my cars for the past 5 years without issues.

@Larry

This is the guy I use. He ships super quick and nicely wrapped in plastic wrap so I can easily shove them in my back seat and front seat without getting the car all dirty. Would be A LOT easier in your cab.

since I have about 7-8/32 left on the drivers this time around I'll just keep it and replace the one with the knife cut in it ... but good to know for the future!

I would replace only one and spend half an hour on a track to break it in
