Default Putting 991.1 in Sports Mode - When To Do It?

I've read a number of posts that suggest waiting until the temps are warm before putting the car into Sports Mode. I missed the reasoning.

Any reason to wait? Any damage from hopping in and hitting the button while cold?

I understand you shouldn't redline a cold engine. My RS7 electronically lowers the redline until warm, but all the low end torque, aggressive shift points and exhaust noise is there from the get go. After it's warm - redline is set higher.

Rationale is: 1) I'm impatient, 2) Love Sports Mode, 3) 25%-50% of my commute is in limp mode and 4) Initial part of my drive is on the highway and want to get to it.

Press sports mode prior to engine start (turn key one click, press sports mode, then start engine). Wait until temps are up to use high revs and you'll be fine.

Exactly my process. Every time.

I buckle my seat belt then hit the Sport button.

Only after you have opened the car door using the finest imported Peruvian llama microfiber towlette. Seriously, just drive it but try not to redline a cold car.

(Unless you are being chased by a velociraptor.)

What is the reason for pressing the Sport mode with the key on prior to starting the engine, rather than waiting until you start to drive away?
My C2S seems to start with a raspier exhaust tone which quiets down after a few seconds running.

Is it okay to turn on/off sports mode while driving?

So it sounds angrier during startup.

Ok to turn it on if you forgot... not ok to turn it off. You should always have sports mode on, it's more fun.

Is this remedied in the 991.2 with the "custom" setting or do you have to engage just like the 991.1 every time you start the car.

I also asked this a while back, and the answer I received from fellow Rennlisters is that when in Sport, and even more so in Sport + (if you have it) modes, additional engine cooling is also triggered. The rational goes like this.... everybody tends to drive conservatively until the engine oil reaches the 180 degree or so temperature. So if in Normal mode, there is less engine cooling going on, you presumably would get up to that operating temperature faster than if you click on Sport right away.

To be honest, I see no material difference in time it takes to get to that operating temp when I am in Normal or Sport mode, so after I start the engine, I always click Sport mode right away...and drive off.... for the same reasons you listed in your post.

991.2 you have to engage every time. Car always starts in normal mode and start/stop on regardless of how you had it before.
