Have You Ever Considered Porsche an Underdog?
#16
It will be simple enough to explain the thinking behind Porsche being an underdog. They don't compete in American races Americans watch nor compete in sales for the ways Americans want to race or more specifically the exhibitions of speed Americans want to emulate. Generally and historically and much improved over 20 years.
Imagine that, a CNN report with a conservative slant!
German cars, to me, are always about the replacement for displacement in the complete package. This made them for the most part in a different, usually lower class from American cars. So, HP vs handling and market share. Yes, the 911 has long been an underdawg. They doggedly clung to the rear engine and air cooling as long as feasible and until technological aids overcame the inherent flaws.
Even though Ford GT may compete or even win in LeMans or other prototypes , Americans could care less. Generally.

Although my Corvette looks showroom-new and gets plenty of attention, I sure never hear the "must be nice" comments that the 911 gets...I definitely don't see the "underdog" perception when I watch how people react to my 911, and how they reacted to my 986.
Of course, it's entirely possible that the CNN writer does not have any idea what "underdog" means...
Hey, CNN:
*shrug* Ultimately, we're debating someone else's word choice and trying to infer what he meant...so we're probably ALL wrong.
When my wife left the polling place yesterday (a local elementary school) there was a group of boys lined up along the fence checking out the 996. When she pulled away, she blipped the throttle for them and they cheered. So there is at least one demographic - 10-year-old boys - who don't think the 911 is an underdog.

AdPock calls out CNN i'll call out AdPock. I know Adam is essentially a fictitious and biased machine whose purpose is to drive content, thank you big brother but I'd rather rage against the machine. You are the same creature you criticise. Should I now repost, rebrand and re-link and say "Rennlist questions the credentials of CNN contributor." I am sure you saw this; Jared Zaugg is author of "Gentlemen, Start Your Engines!" a book on classic sports and racing cars. The views expressed here are his own.
This regurgitation of clickbait degrades like the game "telephone." Each point you bitch about you are just as guilty of.
Whats with the fake indignation? "I’ll admit, I fell for this CNN article because of its catchy headline: “Redefining a classic: Why this might be the most powerful Porsche yet.” pfffffft. You couldn't pass a Porsche article on a bet.
Poorly worded and undefended title. You didn't allow a single line in your blurb to defend that Porsche should not have been an underdog vs. HiPo cars where V12s are the norm or 500hp from a V8 is easy to do. Nor did you defend the "celebrated history" that is out of context or might be relevant to the 911 road car.
Then the historic pics. Look at that cute bug eyed flauch turtle backed little car that can. If thats not an underdog profile I don't know it. AdPock did miss something, the definition of an underdog, real or falsely apparent.
The 911 has always punched above it's weight class as far as street cars, making it by definition to me an underdog. That is generally, most of, a lot of the time, excluding turbo, or that twisty uphill section or long sweepers as long as you long as you keep it above 3500rpm AND I LIKE IT THAT WAY.

You'd think that "tupperware" drivers would be just as petty and small-minded as some of the people driving shaved-down Beetles powered by lawnmower engines, but the Corvette people I've met are by and large enthusiasts who appreciate cool cars of all kinds...
Now if you asked a Corvette guy if he was envious of a 944, I expect there would be snorting.
