Due to weather considerations in NE I am considering going from '14 Cayman S to a '15 Targa 4 or 4S. I would appreciate any comments re Targa top such as rattle, wind noise or other potential problem areas. Are they reliable? Thanks in advance.

My 2014 Targa 4S has been plagued with many rattles (see my other threads for details.) I have them mostly tamped down now, but there's still one rubbery creak from the rear lid that doesn't want to go away.
The other Targa owners on here claim theirs are silent so this tells me one of two things:
1 - A "Version 1.0" bug that they fixed
2 - It's an issue that only shows up as the car ages (I'm at 26k miles.)
I have to be completely honest, the noises have made the Targa a bit of a disappointment to me. I personally wouldn't buy another one unless I was sufficiently convinced that the newer ones are noise-free.
Another trouble spot is the targa bar - it's _extremely_ easy to scratch, and cannot be repaired...only replaced. Someone set something on my car and scratched the top middle piece - it's a $1400 part. I bumped the side with an iPad, that one is a $950 part. So if you get one be careful with the bar.

A couple more thoughts - the car really is a joy to drive, and it gets a lot of attention at P-Car meetups.
I would suggest getting the S, as the AWD (and possibly weight of the rear lid) rob some performance feel.

2015 Targa 4S here with 7k miles. After about 2k started to occasionally get a barely noticeable rattle. Not loud enough to be annoying and only apparent on certain surfaces at certain temperatures, and only with the top up. The dealer managed to fix it. Based on everything I read, would get the S version in a 991.1.

Depending on your height, you will notice buffeting at speeds over 55 with the top and windows down. At my height, 5'8", the buffeting hits my right ear, and can be irritating after a while. Check it out on your test drive. Conversation remains easy at highway speeds with the top down, but between the tire and wind noise, the Bose stereo becomes irrelevant at anything over 65.

Thanks for the above comments. Coming from two Corvettes with Targa I am familiar with rattles. My Cayman S has some rear hatch rattles on uneven roads as well which dealer addressed but not very well. Will probably test drive Monday and we shall see. Thanks again.

For me the noise is from the rear lid somewhere; the actual targa top panel is quiet and in fact seals out road noise very well. I posted a video of my noise in a separate thread.

For what it's worth my 2016 4S targa is quieter with the top up on the highway than my 2013 S coupe was with the glass roof. Very well insulated. It's true that at 65 & over with top down wind noise does take over. Fantastic for back road cruising with the top down ideally. This is where it shines!

Love ours, 11 months and 4,000 miles so far.
One rattle to speak of, bar that runs right-to-left just behinds back seat if I recall correctly.
Bar is easily removed with modest pressure, placed a couple small squares of black foam underneath it and snapped it back in. No biggie, all better.
Love every aspect of the car.

8500 miles on my 2015 Targa 4S. The only rattle I have is an occasional one on the plastic cross bar on uneven pavement with the top down. It comes and goes. Early on I had put a couple of pieces of terrycloth towel under each end and that solved 90% of the rattles.
Other than that it is solid as a tank and a real joy to drive.
