I have. I agree that the 996 requires more driver concentration. I have had a 993 TT, 966 GT3, 997.1 GT3, 997.2 Carrera S with PDK, and now the 991.1 with the power kit. Obviously there was a huge jump relatively from the 993 TT to the 996 GT3 with PCCBs. The 997.1 GT3 was a hair better and more comfy. The 997.2 was like a whole new car and noticeably faster with the PDK. I remember GT3 guys complaining about the new 997.2 C2S PDK beating them at the track. So then after 5 years in my 997.2 PDK I bought the 50th. Its scary quick and a pleasure to drive. But I thought the main difference outside the extra ponies was just interaction in the cockpit. To me the 991.1 GTS with powerkit or 50th is like a GT3-. BUT I fell in love with the N/A motors after having the 993TT (I wish I still had it.) The 991.1 is more like a more refined 997 GT3. I think thats Porsches intent is to let the engineering of one era GT car through to the new era's 911. Its very much evolutionary. Porsche will tell you the 997.2 was revolutionary, but there is a little more comfort in each model.
The 997.1 GT3 was a more comfy 996 GT3. Jumping from a 993 to a 991 would be a shocking jump, but you would know what your doing. The smell is different(air cooled to water cooled). Each car got a bit larger. But the 991 is still very small compared to other cars. Look at the modern Ferraris and McClarens (not the P1) and they are much wider. A new Corvette is like a silverado compared to a 991. Outside o the historic value of the 993 and the pure pleasure of the lines, is not as fun to drive as a 996 and so on. My 996 GT3 was a full Manthey conversion. Upgraded ECU, exhaust and suspension. So the 997.1 GT3 was a refined version of my 996.
All are fun to drive but I didnt get that with the new turbo car. I would stick with the 991.2 GT3. But I think these last 3.8's N/A's are going to be a bit of a classic. Autoweek said be sure to get your $270,000
Lambo V10 because its a member of a very small group of N/A cars that are shrinking quickly. Just conjecture on my part.
I have a 997.2 C4S and a 991.1 C4S. I drive them back to back all the time. I admit I'm not an amateur racer, and while I would like to head to the track someday, I haven't yet. For my type of driving, which consists of tooling around town, spirited back road rides and long highway travel, the 991 wins hands down. However, I still love the 997 as I did my '87 Targa, my '86 Cab, my '90 Cab, my '05 997 C2, my '13 991 C2S Cab, and my current 991 C4S Cab. I'm sure I'll love my .2 C4S Cab when it gets here.
The greatest Porsche is the one you like to drive, whether it's a bare bones 356 or a fully optioned 991.2. Sports cars, GT cars, who cares what you call them? Buy the one you like best, drive the one you like best.
Nothing beats the road feel, the steering and the naturally aspirated acceleration - the sheer driver involvment of it. The sound left something to be desired, but other than that - everything went downhill after it.

The 997 guys were saying it about the 991 when it came out, 996 called the 997 big, cushy and luxurious, 993 guys call the 996 the queen mary with steering feel of a city bus, etc etc.
911s are moving towards being bigger, more comfortable, more gadget oriented, and more isolated. If you don't like that, buy an older one or go to another brand.

Driven 991.1 and 991.2, all those claiming turbo lag and the negative on it, please drive the car first. People seem to read good and bad reviews but don't actually drive it, there is nothing to consider on the turbo lag, it is 0.0001 every gear I hit it in, was instant torque. I raped the car in the test drive, as the sales man told me too. Its's stupid fast, we whipped into corners and came out at 80km planted only to be thrown into the seat instantly going into 3rd. The power band is mental. The sound though on a 991.1 GTS is better
