Default Pirelli PZero front and rear difference

The weather finally got nice enough for me to wash the GTS on my own yesterday. It's been 2 months since I had it opti'd and detailed so it was getting filthy.

I noticed the rear and front PZeros are different, why is that? The front PZero seems to have a rim protector whereas the rear does not. The rear seems more bubbly if that makes any sense.

Obviously they are sized significantly differently, but what is the reasoning behind the design difference?

Btw, centerlocks are a bitch to clean.

My best guess? Wider on the rear to keep the engine-side planted when cornered hard.

Are yours the same? I just want to make sure it should be that way and there aren't different versions of the PZero and they're mismatched.

I was just reading in the BMW X5M forum how one was delivered with 3 summer tires and one smaller run flat.

All the 991.1 P Zero's are like that. Rim protector in the front, and more rounded and none in the rear.

Although, I did see them on the 991.2, and the rear P Zero tires now have the rim protector in addition to the fronts.

Thanks STG - they looked like different tires to me at first glance, freaked me out for a minute. I much prefer the look of the fronts with the protector. I guess something to keep in mind for when it comes time to replace the rears.

Yeah. This has confused guys before.

I like the beefier look of the rears. Fills up the wheel/fender gap more. I think more of a performance thing.

Michelins are supposed to be coming on the 991.2's too. Guys have put them on the 991.1's as replacements, but the rears look too low profile in my opinion. They have the rim protector. The rears on the 991.2 Pirelli's still looked beefy even with the rim protector.

In the future I'd like to try these. From all reports, only do well on dry pavement. Not good in rain.

Look closely at the rears here. Hard to see. Have the rear rim lip. 991.2 P Zero's.

I too believed that the SC2's were horrible in the rain. It is simply not true. If caught in a downpour, simply do the speed limit and you will be fine. I have driven to and from the track for two years with SC2's and have had no problems. The biggest issue I have found is having to stop repeatedly to get tire pressures correct, even an hour after the last heat. These tires do heat up much quicker than standard Ultra Summer tires. Read the reviews on the tires, it will validate my personal experience.

How is the wear on these?

I know a much better handling tire, but also a softer compound correct?

My 2015 Carrera S has the "rim protector" lip on the front Pirelli P-Zeros and none on the larger 295/30R20" rear Pirelli P-Zeros. Seems odd to me they don't look the same.
I will probably change to Michelin Pilot Super Sports when my Pirelli's wear out, as they are reported quieter and smoother riding . . . and all four will look the same. With 15,000 miles I still have 7/32 tread left and they are all four evenly wearing side to side with PDCC so it may be some time.

It is a dual compound tire. I don't notice much ride difference on the street from the PZero. As for wear, I have no idea because they heat cycle out long before the tread gives up. I would not hesitate to use them as a street tire solely.

Actually I previously had PSS tires and really liked them. Cant speak for the tread life of the PZeros, but I got plenty out of the PSS's. I too don't like that they look different, so definitely an option, I think I read they are replacing the PSS tires with a newer version though.

these second generation ( 991.2) oem PZeros , called the " N1 " , where both the front and rear tires now have the rim protector sdewall shape , have been avail from Tire Rack for a while , so unless you have to replace a single damaged 991.1 one, it would make no sense to buy a full set of four superceded " N0 " versions for your 991.1 going forward

advantage of rim protector is obvious, but the tire will look narrower from rear three qtr view or directly behind as its sidewall will be more vertical vs bowed out ...size for size and per the tire specs, the updated " N1 " rear's tread width ( but not the newer fronts ) has been reduced also ..is that due to incorporating the rim protector or as a way to decrease noise by having a bit less rubber hitting the road ? I.e., the tread width of the now std for narrow body 20 inch " N1" 305s in back is same as that for the prev std narrow body 20 inch " N0" 295 on the 991.1 . Marketing sleight of hand ?

I also assume / hope that Pirelli has addressed the interweb complaints of the road noise of the first gen " N0 " vs the quiter running non oem-approved MPSS in the 991.2s oem " N1"s

Just noticed that Pirelli recently announced the 3rd gen P-zero:
