Default 911R- What the 911 should be anyway!

Does anyone else feel like this? After 50 years of evolution this is what the 911 experience should be all about. Light, incredibly agile, very fast and making use of all the latest technologies and materials. Sure it is expensive. Porsches always have been costly but in this case as far as the driving experience you surely get what you pay for, and even though it is a stretch I would pay up for this car. I am sure it will be everyone's COTY if cost is not a factor. I love my GTS but I think with the incredible strides made by other car manufacturers, especially American car companies, this is what Porsche should embody to stay ahead of the game. Too bad it has to be just a halo car for a very select few.

Stripped down, minimal options, manual transmission - sounds like it should be the base model 911. Porsche goes in the other direction and makes it an exclusive, limited production model available to a select few for a very high price.

I'd love to put the engine in my car, to me that's 99% given I have a performance option only manual with no sunroof.

That said I'm still trying to get an R. I hope all of the 918 folks at my dealer pass!

Good luck, but I highly doubt it. They know they can flip it the day after delivery for 150K over like 1 2 3.

Several years ago PAG announced that it planned to increase 911 production. I can't recall the figures but it was a lot, I mean a whole lot. In order to sell these cars I suppose that you'd have to make them appeal to a broader audience. So, while it would be great (for we few enthusiasts) if all 911s more closely resembled the 911R, PAG/VW would not sell as many as they hoped to and leave a lot of profit on the table. In the end, I guess we should just be happy that PAG still makes the GT variants.

Thanks dream crusher.

On the other hand there are only 918 of them and if AP's contradiction of the plaque is correct they'll build 991 of these! I have 73 shots!

73 slots worldwide. If I recall, twenty something extra for USA which are all being handed out by PCNA directly. In other words, ain't happening.

I'm going to pick one up CPO'ed.

So drive them nicely. Just on Sundays when the sun is shinning.

Jim,
I disagree. I like the basic 991.1 Carrera for it's inexpensive price and comfortable everyday driving experience. It has A/C in the seats and GPS.

I own a few earlier Porsche cars that satisfy the urge to go really fast on a road race course. I have six cars.

I may own a 991 911R one day. I would never get in a bidding war for one today.

This has been a topic since like forever: they should just make 'em all like this. The argument typically goes something like this: we shouldn't have to pay extra for full leather (Natural leather, two-tone, GT engine, RAS, Sport Chrono, PCCB, fill in your favorite option here) they should all have it, if they did, economy of scale, these things wouldn't cost nearly as much, you could have it all for half what it costs now.

Which is true. Except as already noted, some like what they can get and save some money. Others are willing to pay for this, but not that. Bottom line, Porsche would be leaving whole piles of money on the table.

Too bad though. The seats alone on the R are to die for!

i was at the Salon yesterday, going back today btw, and i am in awe. Wow. i just got my 991.2 a week ago and it is my everyday car...btw....absolutely awesome! but....the R...indeed the dream 911...best car from Porsche, a dream....because the cost is ridiculous...my C4S is loaded...i got it in CH at slightly over 180 k CHF...this beast the dealers are saying 250k CHF....too much....too much...and thank God it is or i would be banging my head against the wall for not waiting....
BTW....go to the salon....the wow factor is off the charts.
