I'm in the leather business - keep in mind that tapes (depending on the adhesive) can and will lift the pigment off the leather over time. I have seen it happen many, many times. The steering wheel on the 991 is painted leather, not dyed. Not saying it will happen, but it can happen. Just be prepared for it. You can also paint the leather red - that would be better than tape.

Hmmm... This is an interesting point. Not so sure about doing this now. How long of a timeline are we talking about? I can't imagine it would happen too fast.

Good to know. How feasible would it be to paint the black center leather marker? Would it be a possible DIY project.

I assume painting leather red is not a DIY

One of my suppliers paints on leather all the time as a custom, like this:

I know they put a sealer over the paint, so I will ask them if they they think the steering wheel market is viable.

Thanks Dr. Have read many of your previous posts. You know more about leather than any human being I have ever interacted with.

That looks nice!

I'd really like to have a steering wheel like this. Sports design in alcantara, red stitching, and flat bottom, but $1,400 plus sending them my current steering wheel is a bit more than I'd feel comfortable spending on a steering wheel.

So has anyone noticed fading of the painted leather? Maybe this is a question for the GT4 board.

Usually adhesive are acidic, unless manufactured to be neutral. Over time, tape can yellow paper, for example. Probably not an issue with black leather steering wheels but the more you know...

My wheel is alcantara and I'd love to get the 12 marker done in blue to match my painted interior trim... something tells me that painting is not an option though.

I guess it could technically be done if you are able to take your wheel off for an extended period of time.

Decided to try this out. It actually looks very good. I'm still undecided on whether I will keep it or not though, as I don't want it to fade the leather. After working with this tape, I don't think alcantara users will have any issue.

No, a race car would have a white strip.

Actually, most are yellow.
