Default S PSE vs. Non-PSE

Tried searching but had a hard time finding the information I'm looking for. In comparing factory exhaust options, can someone tell me the differences between an S non-PSE exhaust vs. one with PSE? Trying to decide if I want to do anything with my non-PSE setup. Thanks.

Well, other than sound, they are both quad exhaust tips but they have slight differences in the actual finish.

Not sure what your question is really. Are you asking about the difference in sound? Obviously the PSE is louder/deeper/throatier. My car was a non-PSE S and I added the PSE after the fact for $3,500 installed. Money well spent IMO.

Look on U-tube for a guy in Europe that documents his ownership of a 991 S. He has some great sound clips of his car at speed. When I was looking for my 991 I would not have considered one without PSE. It is fantastic.

I have listened to all the 991 PSE online videos , but this is the only one that has captured the true sound of a C2S/C4S with PSE turned on , from yours truly's experience with same , but you need a cab, targa or coupe with sunroof and it has to be opened up to experience this exact sound from the driver's seat...otherwise with top/ sunroof closed and only windows open , that glorious sound is muffled to you and remains mostly for entertaining strangers you pass on the road !

pay closest attn to the 2:15 to 4:15 section !

^^^ That is the video that sold me on the PSE, like the Prague Philharmonic if they covered a guns and roses tune. Just beautiful.

yup...all the other moving car 991 PSE videos sound like they are recorded with a glove covering the mic , during a hurricane or from 500 ft away .

but this video'd sound not only requires the 3.8 S motor and PSE , but also Sport Chrono Pkg , as the PSE sound is much less snarly / angry if you just press the std equipment " Sport " throttle mapping button...gotta pay to play !

also , parking lot or shop bay revving vids are useless..any car sounds " aggressive " when recorded inches from the exhaust tips...even a Camry

To each to his own! I don't care for the PSE sound and it seems entirely "gimmicky" to have a button on a sports car to change the exhaust sound! Either it sounds like a sports car all the time or it doesn't! But I'm in the minoriry (or worse -alone) in this!

The button only opens the valves in the lower RPM range. Even with the button off, the valves open automatically in the higher RPM range (button/no button pressed). Purely a mechanical change with the vacuum valves. Wouldn't really say gimmick.

That's what PSE does, it makes it sound like a sports car all the time. The gimmick is having mufflers that mute it to the point that the car sounds like a sedan.

You are not alone. I'm in the minority too. I don't find the spitting, burping, and gurgling enjoyable. The last good exhaust was the sound of a CGT. Everything since then has been disappointing.

In my opinion, the CGT has the greatest sound of any car ever produced for the road. I like the base sound over the 3.8 sound. It's much more high pitched and race car-ish.

Then again that's a V10. High performance V8's and V10's are always gonna sound better than a flat 6. Not even comparable.

Just an FYI ...

When going from the standard S exhaust to PSE, only the center muffler gets swapped out. Not the side ones behind the rear wheels. New exhaust tips (yes different finish AND fit than the S ones). New PSE button inside the car too and dealer programming.

Now ...... If you have a BASE model Carrera, and want to upgrade to PSE, ALL THREE mufflers get swapped out!
