My 991.2 was completed in early February, spent 2 weeks waiting at the port in Germany for the ship to pick it up and was delivered to the dealer on 3/29.

Was your Targa a May allocation?

Just took delivery of my .2 C4S. Ordered car last week of May, the dealer had just received an extra allocation with two days to lock the build, for a late June build date. I spent 25 years in the car business (M-Bs) and know half the guys at the Porsche dealer. Their initial offer to me was a 1.5% discount. It took all my negotiation skills to get a 4.5% discount. At that point the dealer had all their allocation sold through the first of next year.

I got an allotment and a discount in July.
If you want a discount or an allotment, you have to expand your search area. Each dealer faces a different market and different economic circumstances. Some need you, some don't. You need to find the guy who needs your money.
I'm not surprised China is soaking up lots of allotments. Porsche, obviously, makes more money off a China car than a US car. Still, though, Porsche needs US dealers to remain profitable - alive, if you will. That means they have to sell US cars.

Whoever told you in May that there were no allotments left was wrong.

I put down a deposit in late June for a July allocation.
I ended up with a strong discount (that the dealer asked me not to share), but likely wouldn't have if I didn't have two dealerships bidding for my business.
While my discount was very strong, I've seen others with slightly better on here.

Definitely better than 2%.
The line that "These cars aren't typically discounted" is BS. They may not be selling at invoice + $100, but there's no reason you can't find a better deal from a dealer where supply > demand. It's obviously more difficult with a 991 than a Chevy, but while these are much more exclusive vehicles ... they still aren't rare in the sense that a 911R or M4 GTS is.

Obviously if you find a configuration you like in a car that is on a dealer's lot they will be much more inclined to discount the car and perhaps discount aggressively. As others have said availability for a custom build for the remainder of the year is very limited. So, the dealer is in the driver's seat and will be less interested in offering a hefty discount. It just depends on your timeframe and what you want.

I locked my build last month with a modest 2.1% discount on the order. I'm happy.
Buying across the country might net an additional 3-4% on the sales price if you do the looking/calling and work out the logistics.
