Radar install question
Hi all,
Wrapping up detector/jammer setup on my '14 TTS. I am almost done, however I haven't been able to find a stealthy, clean place to put the interface boxes. Since so many wires run to them, where do you all typically mount them? Does anyone have any pics? Typically in the pics I've seen, nobody highlights this particular part of the installation. :-)
Anyhoo, thanks in advance.

What brand(s) do you have? I have mirror mount for radar and alp for laser and the control box is in the cigarette lighter compartment:

If you pull back the carpet on the passenger side towards the front of the car, there is a spot by the fuse box. There should be enough room there to put the ALP CPU and STiR interface.

Sure, let us know how it goes!

I put mine behind the panel that surrounds the fusebox on the driver's side footwell. It fit between the "firewall" and the fusebox behind that panel. Granted, my junction box is much smaller (Laser Interceptor) so not sure if yours will fit there.

How clean an install do you want? I did a fully concealed install on my 2008 that took me 45 hours to do, and that included making my own dash panel with a Escort 9500ci. It *can* be a lot of work, but mine looked like it came from Porsche when I was done with it. A few photos, you can see it at the bottom where the sunglass holder was...and also the custom Pioneer stereo/nav I installed.
Before the Pioneer (yes, I had so much fun with the 9500ci, I tore the dash out a second time)
My USB access to the unit:
Laser shifters front and rear... look in the center for the front one.
The hardest part of the install - BY FAR - is running wires through the firewall into the passenger compartment. Porsche has that sewn up airtight, and you can't find any spots to run them in. Be sure to run your power wires for the speaker on the radar unit away from all other 12v power wires or you will pick up alternator whine in the speaker.

I'm close to your 45 hour mark as well. I've been doing a lot of running wires, then staring for 20 minutes, then pulling and re-running, then staring and thinking again. I'm re-terminating all cables so that at perfect lengths with no slack. Color coding everything with vinyl tape. Currently, everything looks 100% stock, and I'd like to keep it that way. Hiding the main wiring modules is the only thing I have left. The firewall issue wasn't that difficult for me, actually. There is a seal/grommet that can be modified on the driver's side in the battery bay to allow passage. That's how I got my wires into the cabin.
Despite being a long project, I've had a ton of fun getting to know my car and all of it's secrets. Pulling apart bumpers and stripping the interior is an adrenaline rush since when I first looked at the gutted car I wondered if I could get it all back together.

I know that feeling. My wife comes out in the garage and I have the front wheels off, the front in the air. the bumper cover off and over in one corner, the seats out, dash panels haphazardly strewn about and she says "You bought a brand new expensive car and now you have it pieces on the floor. I don't understand. I sure hope you know what you are doing".
Under my breath as she turned and went back in I muttered, "so do I! ".....
BTW, I zip-tied my junction box up high under the steering wheel area. My aching back.

I'd also check out Radar Mirror (http://radar-mirror.com/). Had that done with the setup that trysixty did and it looks great and totally stealth with the ashtray closed.

just out of interest (given not from USA), are radar detectors allowed in the states? I used to know quite a few people had them here in Aus, but don't any more. Are illegal here but not sure if thats the only reason people stopped using them.
We need something here though!! our respective state governments are addicted to the revenue raising form speeding fines. Our local one even worked out could get an ext 18% revenue if they removed the tolerance, so now you get fined if 1km over posted limit.

Illegal in Virginia and the District of Columbia, which - because I live in this backwards state - meant I had to do a REALLY good stealthily install.
