Default What type of oil to use?

Hello - what type of oil is everyone using? Mobil 1? My local garage says that I should really use AMSOIL over Mobile 1 - they say it's a much better product. Thoughts?

Also what's the consensus on oil change interval? Every 5k miles?

Thanks,
DJ

I don't want to sound rude, but PLEASE do a search. This has been discussed in detail. Happy reading!

Use a Porsche A40 approved oil. There are about 200. Amsoil is not one of them.

I like Mobil 5W50 and Motul 5W40 Excess best. I change every 5,000 miles. Yearly, regardless of low mileage.

LexVan knows of what he speaks. That's why I too am using Mobil 1 5w50 and changing every 5000 miles.

I switched as well to Mobil1 5W50 based on oil analysis reports LexVan had presented. NAPA at $5.99/qt can't beat it.

Mobil 1 is fine for daily driving.

Motul for HPDE.

Do you recommend the Mobil 1 0W-40 for winter use (I'm in WI)?

Thanks for your help.

Porsche does. And that's what is important. In its approved oil sheet Porsche says that at -25C or colder use 0w-40.

Frankly, if I lived in an area where it got down much below freezing during the winter months I'd use 0w-40 during the winter/colder months even if I used 5w-40 or 5w-50 during the summer.

I'm kind of on the fence regarding switching back to 0w-40 come next oil change in both of my cars. Winter's coming and while it doesn't get that cold here where I live and drive I do appreciate the cold flow feature of the 0w-40 oil.

Apparently Amsoil is now Porsche A40 Approved - http://www.amsoil.com/shop/by-produc...tic-motor-oil/

I can't find much on the forum regarding whether Mobil 1 or Amsoil is preferred.

Thanks
