Any updates on when the 991.2 order books will open?

That makes total sense. That's why we're already seeing test mules for 991.2 4, Targas, etc. It's only a facelift, why would they reset the whole release cycle right after expanding the model range.

I suspect all luxury car makers are lowering their sales projections for China. This means they need to push volumes in the US. Therefore, I would think they are going to try and put out as many models as they can. I think this will apply to the whole industry generally. I am just not entirely sure how Porsche specifically will react...

Interesting thread - I am trying to figure out Porsche's plans for the Targa as well. Earlier this year I bought my wife a new Targa 4S and myself a new Turbo S. Both great cars, but something about the Naturally Aspirated Targa with the top down and sport exhaust on that is magical, and instant angry acceleration fully experienced. My Turbo S doesn't break a sweat; but I love how the Targa works hard to please. So my dealer was able to get me an allocation for a December build on a 2016 Targa GTS. From posts I have seen spy shots of facelift Targa with new rear end that would denote it is switching to Turbo like Carerra. The NA in Targa is only way I would go. My sense is they won't come out with GTS for awhile but I can't imagine them icing the Targa since I read where one of every eight 911s sold is a Targa. I think the current Targa looks classier and more vintage and clean than the spyshots I have seen, but that's a matter of personal taste. Perhaps Porsche is going to hedge...see how the lineup does with turbos and then introduce GTS as NA option later on.

I read a post somewhere that they are accepting orders in Germany currently. This would indicate that the orders should open within the next 30 days or so here at the longest.

Dead certain it's for a 991.2. It says "2017" and I have new features like Rear Wheel Steering, Lane Assist, etc. It looks like my dealer could submit my order shortly after the online configurator went up. I had placed a deposit in August so maybe that sped up things.
