Default Sport Button & Oil Temperature

Has anyone noticed that when the Sport Button is active, your Oil Temperature runs about 199 degree F.

When it's off, the Oil Temperature climbs to over 230 degree F.

Is this normal for freeway driving?

My Sport Exhaust button has no effect on this Temp, only the Sport Button.

Yep, that is exactly what mine does.

Think the button may open an additional oil cooler. Mine does the same.

If you have the 3rd oil cooler then for sure Sport+ opens it and I think the same if the Sport button is pushed.

Sport and Sport+ buttons activate secondary oiler cooler. Oil temperature runs higher when none of the Sport modes are selected as this is theoretically more 'efficient', i.e. lowers fuel consumption.

But what is actually better for the engine & oil? Higher temp? Lower temp? Is the temp difference (approx 20 degrees C) significant enough to make a difference?

I prefer the throttle response and handling in Sport mode, but if the oil performance is optimal at the warmer (~110 C) temp when just cruising/commuting, then I'd be fine to adapt to having the Sport mode off.

Opinions?

Rower, go read my UOA thread. I'm in Sport Plus 99.9% of the time. My oil analysis numbers are outstanding.

I stay in Sport by default (3.4L 981 engine), but I occasionally spend some time in normal mode just to get the oil over 212F. Seems like you'd eventually end up with a sump full of water otherwise.

LexVan, I don't see your thread -- did your report include water content?

I'll post the link tomorrow when I'm on my laptop.

Water? Do you mean fuel dilution??

No, water is a combustion by-product, and at least some of it is supposedly able to find its way to the crankcase. If the oil is never allowed to exceed 212F/100C, the water never gets a chance to boil out.

At least that's what I was always told, back in the days when you could actually put your hands on your car's engine...

No moisture in my oil. My car gets driven. No sitting in traffic. No short trips here.
